On Saturday, March 30 the University Choir under director John Tute presents a concert at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 54 At the volunteer's meeting on Valentine's Day, the Children's Aid Society had the opportunity of learning more about the magical world of the clown. The art of clowning is serious business and the professional clown treats his craft with respect. Woven within its framework are strong ethics which demand a commit- ment to learning and excellence in execution that we found enthralling. Clowns have their own fraternities, Clowns of America and the World Clown Association, and individuals can attend clown seminars across North America or attend clown school through the University of Wisconsin. Being a clown, or taking on the personifi- cation of that venerable old gentleman, Santa Claus, is more demanding that most realize. The history of clowns if fascinating. The older 'white faced' clown originated in France, the August clown is known by his big nose, big mouth and oversized trousers. The newest member of the family, the hobo clown grew out of the Great Depression. Today you will find 'care clown§' plying their trade as volunteers working with children or in hospitals and nursing homes. There are also 'ministry clowns' and 'party clowns', all lady, Dorothy Brock and talented ingenue Peggy Sawyer. Peggy can't believe her luck when she's chosen to be one of the chorus members for Pretty Lady. It's a dream come true for this little actress from Allentown, Pennsylvania, who has her sights set on Broadway. She gets her chance when Dorothy can't go on opening night. It's up to Peggy and her fabulous footwork to step in and save the show. Based on the 1993 Warner Brothers film starring Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell and Ginger Rogers, 42nd Street opened in August, 1980 to rave reviews and ran for a remarkable 6,137 performances on Broadway. From Beanie (every clown chooses a name which can even have its own U.S. Government- issued car license!) alias Pat Willows, CAS members learned that most people who take up clowning have been deeply touched by personal tragedy. Bringing giggles and a little laughter into the world helps them to go on. In becoming a clown they experience the therapeutic healing of laughter and learn that there is little in life that does not have a humorous side. They also learned a little about the use of puppets and toys to engage children and adults who would otherwise not be able to communicate with us. The Children's Aid Society in Goderich has been offered the opportunity to host a six-week course on Clown Basics — enough to kick-start a local volunteer Care Clown Unit if there are enough interested people. Please call Joan Van den Broeck at the office if you would like to participate. The local number to phone is 524-7356, for outside the calling area dial 1-800- 265-5198. The cost for the course will be nominal. Further details will follow if there are enough interested people to proceed.
