Blyth Novices top Teeswater
In completing three games in the
past week in their five game
WOAA series against Teeswater,
the Blyth Novices came out victors,
seven points to three.
On Feb. 19, Teeswater visited,
ready for battle.
Both goalies were steady during
the first frame and most of the sec-
ond as both teams were shut out.
Teeswater broke through the bar-
rier first, with 2:31 left in the mid-
dle period.
Blyth tied the match at one, when
Ryan McClinchey scored half way
through the third, only to fall
behind a minute later.
The hometowners quickly evened
the score when Brett Bean, assisted
by Luke Anderson, pushed one past
the Teeswater netminder before 35
seconds had passed.
With under four minutes left in
the game, Teeswater once again
took the lead, but Blyth would not
be defeated.
Nathan Witherspoan popped one
in, aided by Tyler Kernighan.
The game ended in a three-three
draw.
The following day, Blyth took to
the road, stopping Teeswater on
home ice.
Kernighan, assisted by Sandy
Hay, scored the only goal of the
game.
Blyth's goalie Justin Peters
earned the shutout.
Thursday brought Teeswater to
town for the final matchup.
Once again, Kernighan came
through with the lone goal of the
contest. Witherspoon captured an
assist.
Blyth takes on Mitchell at home,
Feb. 29, then travels for the Sunday
competition.
Blyth Atoms, win, lose, tie 2
The Blyth Atoms were very busy
last week, playing four playoff
games in five days.
On Wednesday, they opened
their best-of-five WOAA playoff
series against Milverton with a 4-2
loss. Kirk Stewart and Robbie
Archambault scored for Blyth with
Cole Stewart earning an assist.
Coach Tom Jarrett said the team
played well, but were hurt by some
"foolish" penalties taken late in the
game.
The next two games held on
Friday and Saturday, both ended in
ties. In Friday's 3-3 game,

The second draw of Brussels
Curling ended recently with the
following teams taking top prizes:
first, 47 points, Mervyn Bauer,
Heather Blake, Clem Steffler, Jason
Gropp; second, 40.5 points, Orval
Bauer, Valerie Shortreed, Phyllis
Steffler, Phil Graber; third, 39.5
points, Mike Alexander, Madelene
Steiss, George Zwep, Pauline
The Brussels PeeWee House-
league team had a tough time last
week, losing two playoff games.
On Friday, they were defeated 9-
3 by Blyth. Brussels goals were
scored by Chris Coulter, Robbie
Kerr and Brian Oldfield. Assists
The Belgrave Girls lost a 5-0
game to Kincardine last Monday
evening.
Coach Cam Procter said that,
despite the loss, the team showed
great improvement, having lost
with a single going to Cole Stewart.
Assists were awarded to Bradley
Schmidt and Andrew Toll.
On Saturday, the teams skated to
a 1-1 draw. Jeff Carter tallied a
score for Blyth with Cole Stewart
earning an assist.
Jarrett said, "The team dominated
play in both games, but Milverton
was better able to capitalize on goal
scoring chances."
On Sunday, Blyth made up for
their game one loss with a 2-1
victory. Cole Stewart and Shaun
Henry scored for Blyth, with an
assist going to Micah Loder.
Jarrett said this was the best
Patterson.
The ladies curling also ended
with the top teams as follows: first,
43 points, Marie Stute, Velma
Locking, Abi Corbett; second, 40
points, Jane Zwep, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Sheila Cousins; third,
35 points, Sharon Brown, Valerie
Shortreed, Julie Jutzi.

On Saturday, they suffered a 5-1
loss to Stephen Township. Todd
scored for Brussels, assisted by

The Brussels Novices got their
best-of-five WOAA consolation
series off to a good start, with a 4-3
triumph over Belmore.
Brent Wheeler scored a pair of
goals, including the overtime
winner. Additional goals were
scored by Scott Armstrong and
Brandon Blake. Robbie Semple
earned a pair of assists with a
single going to Philip Wedow.
Crusaders lose
The Wiarton Redmen ended the
Brussels Crusaders 12 game
winning streak with a 7-5 home ice
win Sunday afternoon. The win
gives the Redmen a one game lead
in their best of seven Senior 'A'
semi-final series.
Ron Strome and Tom McDonald
each scored twice and set up two,
while linemate Steve Fritz enjoyed
a one goal, three assist game.
The Crusaders rallied from a
three goal first period deficit,
scoring three in the second to tie.
However, Wiarton scored twice in
43 seconds early in the third to
regain the lead and hold off the
Crusaders.
Game three is in Wiarton Sunday
at 2 p.m. Game Two and Four sites
and times are as yet undecided due
to a conflict in ice time with the
Optimist Atom Tournament in
Brussels this weekend.
The winner of this series
advances to the WOAA finals to
meet either Ripley or Clinton.
The Blyth Juveniles stayed alive
in their best-of-seven OMHA
playoff series against Cayuga with
a 4-2 victory on Sunday night.
After trailing 2-1 with only five
minutes left in the game. The
offense came alive, scoring three
more goals and earning the victory.
Blyth goals were scored by Tim
Lyons, Mike Heffron, Chris
Howson and Mike Bromley.
Assists were awarded to Mike
Salverda (two), Bromley, Nathan
Bantams

Tiverton
The Blyth Bantams won their
WOAA playoff series against
Tiverton last Monday, with a 4-1
victory.
Blyth goal scorers were Darryl
Bromley, Jeff Cowan, Mike
Courtney and Chris Carter. Assists
were awarded to Mike Haggitt
(two), Bromley, Carter, Courtney,
Chris Dunbar and Mike Ansley.
Zurich will be their opponent in
the next series.
Loder, Brad Mulvey, Mark Wilson
and Benji Hakkers.
Coach Neil Salverda said the
players, several of whom have been
fighting the flu, played admirably.
He singled out goaltender Mike
DeJong for his stellar play.
The series will resume this
Saturday in Cayuga with Cayuga
holding a points lead of 7-3. The
sixth game, if necessary will be
played on Sunday evening in Blyth
at 8 p.m.
The Blyth Juveniles' goalie can do nothing but watch as a
high shot from. opponent Cayuga flies by during the
Sunday night game. Blyth staved off elimination as they
doubled Cayuga 4-2.
