Atoms topple Zurich 8-0 A clean sweep Brussels Curling Club hosted a mixed bonspiel this past Saturday at the BMG arena. Their family team, from Milverton, which also included their mother Judy and cousin David Gray, went home winners of first place in the first draw. In the opening game of the series in Blyth, both teams came out shooting. When the smoke cleared after 45 minutes, Blyth were the winners of an 8-6 blasting. Blyth had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but Stephen Twp. battled back to cut the lead to a 5-4 at the end of the second. Stephen scored twice early in the third to go ahead, but Blyth bounced back with three goals of their own and held on for the victory. Goal scorers for Blyth were Drew Cornell with three; Derek Cook, two; Joel Arthur, Dave Ansley and Matt Anderson. Assists went to Anderson, three; Darrell McDougall, two; Derek Cook, two; Tyler Stewart, Graham Worsell, Bryce Toll, Jeremy Van Amersfoort and Adam Anderson. Game two in Huron Park began much the same. Blyth built a 5-3 lead by the end of the first period, but could not hold on. Stephen's The Brussels Curling Club held a mixed bonspiel on Satwday, Feb. 24. There were 20 teams entered. On the 9:30 a.m. draw the winners were: first, 48.25 points, Judy Hamilton, David Gray, Jon Hamilton, Scott Hamilton; second, 35.75 points, Jim Bosman, Irma Price, Anne Bosman, John Lowe; third, 35.75 points, Bruce Hahn, Martha Bosch, Walter Bosch, Diane Hahn; fourth, Orval Bauer, Mary Bancroft, Murray Bancroft, Ruth Batrr; fifth, Ernie Lewington, Heather Blake, Jeff Lewington, Brian Warwick, Tom Warwick; sixth, 32.25 points, Bill Dowd, Jeanne Baillie, Bill Young, Jeanette defence tighteneci up and they scored twice in the second to tie the game and added four unanswered goals in the third period to win 9-5. Blyth travelled to Huron Park again for game three. Stephen again played a tough defensive game and won a squeaker 3-2. Blyth hosted game four in a must win situation. Again strong defence and hot goaltending proved too much for Blyth. Stephen came out on top with a 5-1 win despite splendid goaltending from Blyth's Dean Wilson. Pointgetters for Blyth in the final three games were: Ansley, three goals; Matt Anderson, two goals; Drew Comeil, one goal, one assist; Bryce Toll, one goal; Shaun Brom- ley, one goal; Adam Anderson, two assists; Jeremy Van Amersfoort, two assists; Derek Cook, one assist; Graham Worsell, one assist; Joel Arthur, one assist and Darrell McDougall, one assist. Ansley and Matt Anderson each reached 50 games for the season. The Blyth PeeWees will now compete in group playoffs and attend the Goderich's Young Canada week during March Break. Brussels took the lead early in the game when Matthew Clarkson scored, assisted by Kyle Stephen- son. The hometowners took a 2-0 lead into the middle frame on the addi- tion of a netter by Sean Hoegy. After assisting on a tally by Brit- McDonald, Danica McNichol, Nora Stephenson; fourth, 34.5 points, Jim Patterson, Pauline Patterson, Bill Quipp, Donna Quipp; fifth, 31.5 points, Fred McClure, Heidi McClure, Carmen Bernard, Mary Bernard; sixth, Ross Engel, Shirley Waldie, Stan Waldie, Jane Rock; seventh, Bill Weir, Norma Weir, Paul Weir, Debbie McIntyre; eighth, Pete DeJong, Judy DeJong, Daryl! Capturing assists for the game The Belgrave Atoms started their best-of-five WOAA playoff series against Stephen Twp. last weekend. On Saturday, the two teams skated to an exciting 1-1 tie. Chad Cook scored for Belgrave,, assisted by Kyle Campbell. Manager Gord Folkard said the team showed good composure, and Played a very good defensive game. On Sunday, they were defeated in the second game by a close 3-2 score. Matt Rochetta and Scott Folkard each had a goal and an assist for Belgrave, with an extra assist going to Travis Hopper. He complimented goal.- tender Matt Cowan for his solid play in both games. Tykes lose 7-3 The Blyth Tykes lost a tough 7-3 game to Zurich last Saturday. Josh Albrechtas scored all three Blyth goals.
