Bnng the world to your home!
That's the message being spread
by Julia Lubczynski of Student
Travel Schools (STS), a non-profit
cultural exchange organization that
is looking for volunteer families to
host students, ages 15 to 18, from
France, Italy, Holland, Germany,
Poland, Scandinavia, and
Switzerland coming to this area to
attend local high schools for five or
10 monthg beginning this
September.
"Hosting an exchange student is a
rewarding experience for the entire
family, and it's a great way to learn
first hand about a new culture",
says Lubczynski who heads up STS
in Canada.
Being a host family means
sharing your home and way of life
with a boy or girl eager to learn
about you and about Canada. Host
families provide meals, accom-
modation, supervision and care
during a student's visit to Canada.
In return, the students are expected
to participate as much as possible
in the family's day-to-day activities.
This may include doing minor
household chores, such as walking
the dog, helping with the dishes, or
occasional baby sitting.
Students participating in the
program have intermediate levels
of English, and are accepted into
the program for their enthusiasm,
academic achievement, and ability
to be flexible. All of the students
are fully insured and are
responsible for their own spending
money and clothing allowance
during their entire stay in Canada.
The students will be arriving in
Canada in late August and
returning home after completing
their high school year.
"Each student is very different,
and we spend a lot of time trying to
match students and families who
share interests and hobbies. Rest
assured if things don't go as
smoothly as expected, an STS Area
Representative will be available for
help every step of the way," says
Lubczynski.
Lubczynski says that many
different people can become STS
host families provided they have
the right attitude.
"Host families can be married or
single, with or without children,
and they can be younger or older
people. They can live in a house or
apartment, in the city or in the
country. The main requirement is
that they approach their role as host
parents with a positive attitude and
to have a desire to share their lives
with others," says Lubczynski.
