A Salute
to
Scouting and Guiding
Scouting is a growing, worldwide
youth movement. Founded in 1907 by
Robert Baden-Powell in England, it
came to Canada in early 1908. In 1912
the Boy Scout Association was
granted a royal charter throughout the
Commonwealth by King George V. The
Canadian General Council of the Boy
Scout Association, incorporated June
12, 1914, was a branch of the Boy
Scout Association until Oct. 30, 1946,
when it became an independent
member of the Boy Scout World
Conference. The name was changed to
Boy Scouts of Canada and to Scouts
Canada in 1976. Every governor-
general since Earl Grey in 1910 has
been "Chief Scout".
The stated aim of Scouts Canada is
to help boys and young adults develop
their character as resourceful and
responsible members of the
community. There are five programs:
Beavers (for boys 5-7), Cubs (boys 8-
10), Scouts (boys 11-14, Venturers
(boys 14-17), Rovers (young adults 17-
26).
Girl Guides in Canada dates back to
January 1910, when the 1st St.
Catharines Company was registered
by the Girl Guide Organization
founded in Great Britain the previous
year by Lord Baden-Powell.
Headquarters were established in
Toronto in 1912, then five year later a
Canadian Council was federally
incorporated and in 1961 the
organization became known as Girl
Guides of Canada/Guides du Canada.
The philosophy of the organization is
expressed in the promise of duty to
God, monarch and country, to help
others at all times and to obey the
Guide law. This 10-point law and the
motto, "Be Prepared", reflect the
organization's aim of training girls to
fulfill their roles as responsible
citizens and family members. The
guiding program requires girls at
different levels to pass a series of
tests to earn badges in a wide variety
of fields. Camping and nature activities
have always been an important
element. Groups are: Sparks,
Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders,
Rovers.
