Novices' Rushton solid in net ports Atoms' Krotz gets 3 PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1996 The Brussels Novice team lost two WOAA playoff games against Clifford last week. On Tuesday, they -suffered a heart-breaking 4-2 loss. Clifford scored the winner with less than two minutes left in the third, and The Blyth Juvies are getting clos- er to a much-needed win against Cayuga in the OMHA semi-final series. In the third game of the series, n Saturday in Cayuga, the Blyth squad narrowly missed victory, being edged by the home team, 7-6. Scoring for Blyth were Jamie Bromley with two, Chris Stewart, Chris Howson, Mike Bromley and Mike Heffron. Assists were creditted to Mike Bromley, two; Howson, two; Brad Mulvey, two; Stewart, Tim Lyons and Benjie Hakkers. Coach Neil Salverda said, "We The Wingham Wescast PeeWee Bs played two games during the past week, scoring an easy win and playing to a disappointing tie. In Belmore on Friday, Feb. 9, Wingham handed a hapless Teeswater team an 11-0 pasting. Justin Black got things going for Wingham, banging in a loose puck from Peter Dixon and Jim McCracken, enroute to a 5-0 first period lead. Tom Mullin then scored from Justin Campbell and Aaron Himmelman. Tim Robinson then followed from Kyle Anderson and Adam McQuiggin, then Garret Skinn scored from Brett Coulthard. Campbell closed out the scoring in the first from Craig Marks. In the second it was Marks unassisted, Himmelman from Mullin and then Mullin from added an empty-netter in the final minute. Brandon Blake and Philip Wedow scored for Brussels, with assists going to Scott Armstrong and Kelly White. On Sunday, team play suffered which resulted in a close call to a shorthanded Howick team which had called up three players to fill in. Wingham scored first as Coulthard fired a slapper that caught the Howick goalie off guard. Anderson and McQuiggin assisted. Howick then scored five consecutive points as rushing Wingham defenseman got caught time and time again out of position. Late in 'the second period Wingham calrhe back as Campbell and Coulthard passed to a wide open McQuiggin, who beat an out score. Blake scored the lone Brussels goal, assisted by Johnathan Engel. Trainer Murray Armstrong credited the team with two good efforts, and complimented goal- tender Patrick Rushton for his solid play in net. about the next game. On Wednesday they starte.d their best-of-five WOAA playoff series with Elma-Logan, and skated to a 5-4 overtime victory. Nolan Krotz led the offense, with a hattrick and an assist. Joel Hemingway and Mark Hunter scored the other two Brussels goals, with further assists going to Hemingway and Lee Dilworth. On Thursday, Elma-Logan evened up the series with a 3-2 victory. Tyler Campbell and Krotz scored for Brussels, with Heming- way and Dilworth assisting. On Saturday, the team travelled to Southamptom for a tournament. They played their first game The Blyth Midgets closed their season with three straight one-goal losses to Stephen Twp. On Feb. 5, they lost by a 7-6 score. After leading 6-2 in the second period, the Blyth defense faltered, allowing the visitors to tie the game before the end of regula- tion. Stephen scored the winning goal at 8:37 of the overtime frame. Blyth goals were scored by Brian Marks, Nathan Loder, Mark Wilson, Chris Stewart, Chad Haggitt -and Don Dolmage. Assists were awarded to Stewart (two), Mike Salverda (two), Loder, Dolmage, Wilson and Mike Haggitr. On the:next night, they travelled to Stephen-and lost by a 4-3 score. Bayfield downs Blyth 6-1 The Blyth Atoms took to the ice last Wednesday for an exhibition contest against Bayfield, with their opponents skating to a 6-1 victory. Robbie Archambault scored the lone Blyth goal, assisted by Drew Crawford. Coach Tom Jarrett said the team played well in the first half of the game, but got sloppy as the game wore on. He added that the Bayfield goalie played a strong game, and helped keep Blyth out of the game. against Ripley, and won 5-3 in overtime. Krotz again had a hattrick, with singles going to Hunter and Tyler Campbell. Assists were awarded to Darrell McClure (two), Hemingway, Hunter and Darryl Houston. In their second game, victory was not to be as they were defeated in a close 3-2 game by a strong Durham squad. Hunter and Kyle Stephenson scored for Brussels, with Krotz earning an assist. Coach Alan Krotz commended his team for their efforts, pointing out that each of the four games was important and proved a real test for their ability to play under pressure. He complimented goaltender Bryce Wedow for his solid play in net. After falling behind 4-1, the team answered with two unanswered goals, but could not net the fourth goal and came up a bit short. Wilson scored_ a pair of goals for Blyth, with Rick Cook adding another. Assists were credited to Stewart (two) and Salverda. On Feb. 11, their season ended with a tough 5-4 loss. As with the first game, Blyth had a comfortable lead, but were unable to hold it. All of Blyth's goals were scored in the first period. Salverda scored a pair, with singles going to Chad Haggitt and Loder. Assists were picked up by Chad Haggitt, Marks, Jeff Cowan and Jeff Ferguson. Stephen scored three goals in the second, and tallied the winner at 11:53 of the third.
