THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1996 PAGE 9.
Christians gather for World Day of Prayer
The annual World Day of Prayer
service will be held at Brussels
United Church at 7:30 p.m. on
March 1. Everyone is welcome.
Using the theme, "God Calls us
to Respond," Christian women of
Haiti have prepared the 1996
World Day of Prayer service.
Haiti, the world's first Black
independent republic, has in this
century suffered from military
occupancy, internal political
repression, natural disasters and
widespread poverty. Nevertheless,
the return of democratically-elected
President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in
1994 was cause for hope among the
people.
World Day of Prayer is a global,
ecumenical movement of
"informed prayer and prayerful
action." On the first Friday in
March each year, people in over
170 countries participate in a
common service in their own
locality. Services are translated into
hundreds of languages and dialects.
In Canada, the World Day of
Prayer is sponsored by the Women's
Inter-Church Council of Canada.
Members of the national council
are drawn from the following
denominations: African Methodist
Episcopal, Anglican Church of
Canada, Baptist Federation of
Canada, Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ), Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Canada, Mennonite,
Presbyterian Church in Canada,
Religious Society of Friends,
Roman Catholic Church, Salvation
Army and the United Church of
Canada. In many Canadian
communities, other denominations
are also involved.
Offerings from the services in
Canada are used to support the
work of Women's Inter-Church
Council of Canada in ecumenism,
spirituality, human rights and
issues of special concern to women.
They also cover the costs of
printing and distributing materials
and to support projects in Canada
and abroad.
Among the overseas projects
supported by the 1995 World Day
of Prayer offerings a tie: a
handicraft project to provide
employment in Cap Haitien, Haiti;
work among poor and homeless
young women in Cristalina, Brazil;
training for indigenous women in
San Lucas, Guatemala; an agricul-
tural project in Omboga, Kenya;
humanitarian relief for war widows
and orphans in Burundi; production
of resources by Women Church,
Seoul, Korea; and a women's
gathering in Tuvalu, South Pacific.
In Canada, World Day of Prayer
grants from Women's Inter-Church
Council helped with production of
worship resources by Micah
Institute of Calgary; support for the
Annual Vesper Service of Canadian
Girls in Training; support for
planning a celebration of the
Ecumenical Decade of Churches in
