I Belgrave tops Brussels Brussels and Belgrave Atoms faced off on Feb. 1 in Belgrave with the hosts coming out on the top by 4-1. Brussels lone goal was scored by Kenny McCallum. Two days later Brussels was on the road again to Zurich and this time came up with a 4-2 win. The group got off to an early lead with three goals in the first period, while shutting the home team down. Scoring nods went to Nick Camp- bell, Matt Clarkson and Brandon Dixon. Assists were credited to Brittany Kellington, Jimmy Franken, and Sean Hoegy. Zurich brought it within two going into the third, then Dixon snuck one home, unassisted, to pro-_ vide some insurance. Zurich got one more before the period ended but it was too little too late. On Feb. 11 the team played in a tournament in Harriston. Their first game against Walkerton was not a great start with the Brussels squad losing 4-2. The team got off to a great start It wasn't pretty but the Brussels Crusaders took a one game lead in their best of seven series with a 9-7 win over the Arthur Tigers Saturday night. Games two and three are in Arthur with game four (Saturday at 7:30) and game five (Sunday at 2:00) scheduled for Brussels. Tim Fritz and Tom McDonald each scored twice with singles by Brian Campbell, Phil Livermore, Kevin McArter, Dean Wheeler, and Brent Vandenakker into the empty net. Goals were scored quickly with the teams scoring in 2:45 in the first, followed by three Crusader goals in 2:09 to open the second. Mike Brooks led the Arthur attack with four goals and an assist including two 33 seconds apart. The Crusaders finished their 1996 schedule last Wednesday with a 6-2 win over the Clinton Radar. Greg Mulvey scored once and set up two more with McArter, Vandenakker, Wheeler, Corey McKee, and Dwaine Nichols scoring singles. The game, played in one hour and 50 minutes, gave the Crusaders a 16-6-2 record and third place in Senior "A" hockey action. Individually the Crusader goaltenders won the trophy for lowest goals against average. Brussels Tykes battle hard Brussels Tykes came up against a strong Bayfield team with one very dominant player in a recent contest. Mathew White and Adam Corbett did a good job of controlling him and limiting his scoring chances. Scoring for Brussels was Andrew McDonald and Adam Corbett each with a goal and Chris Corbett with two goals. Also getting good chance to score were Adam McClure, Christopher Jutzi, and Cory Chapman. On defence was Chase Chapman, Nathon Prior, Mitch Blake and Adam Corbett, who all had their hands full trying to keep Bayfield's Number 10 away from the Brussels net. In net for Brussels was Tom Cronin, who made some key saves to keep Brussels in the game. The final score was 6 - 4 for Bayfield. getting both their goals in the first period but it was a scoring drought after that. Campbell got both points. Joel Hemingway and Franken assisted on both goals. The next game against Walkerton was a 3-2 nailbiter. With the oppo- sition holding a 2-0 lead into the third, things didn't look good for the Brussels squad, but a three- point final period put them ahead for the win. Scoring were McCal- lum, Campbell and Hemingway, all of whom also got credits for the assists. The final game had Brussels in top form against a St. Mary's squad. Brussels again took the lead in the first with two from Hoegy, off the stick of McCallum, then by Tyler Campbell, unassisted. They managed three more in the second before St. Mary's got on the board. Scoring was Hoegy, Dixon and McCallum, while assists went to McCallum, Clarkson, Hoegy and Daniel Cameron. Zurich brought it within three in the third, but again it wasn't enough to get the back the game. Brussels allowed 104 goals in 24 games with Ripley and Palmerston finishing second with 105 goals against. As well Corey McKee and Tim Fritz finished seventh and eighth in league scoring. Sean Burton of Ripley won his third consecutive championship with 47 goals and 82 points. WOAA SENIOR HOCKEY FINAL STANDINGS Ripley 17-5-2 37 pts. Wiarton 17-6-1 36 pts. Brussels 16-6-2 34 pts.
