The 21-month old, daughter of Trish and Dan, who was visiting her aunt Linda TenPas in Victoria B.C. recently, got some pretty professional advice from Karen Magnussen. Linda teaches skating with the former World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist. • • .•• • . • . • • . di' • : •: di •• fil • •. di • • • Brussels, Morris & Grey Recreation & Brussels Optimist Club would like to thank everyone for making the Valentine's Dance & Draw a great success Winners were: $500. cash - Carrie Moore - Kenilworth T.V. - Judy Somers - Brussels C.D. Linda TenPas, daughter of Hank and Agnes TenPas of Brussels, has spent the past several months work- ing alongside former Olympic Sil- ver Medalist and World Figure Skating Champion Karen Mag- nussen in Vancouver B.C. TenPas, who spent her formative years skat- ing with the Brussels Figure Skat ing Club, was coached by Magnussen during her last year of skating at the North Shore Winter Club in Vancouver during the late 1980s. She also worked with her at the time, conducting a children's program called Champions Way. TenPas, who had returned to the Brussels area for a time, moved back to Vancouver in August 1995 . Now a skating teacher at the Van- couver Skating Club, with which she has just signed a 12-month con- tract, was one of two instructors selected by Magnussen to help with her Top Notch Skating Schooling at 8 Rinks in Burnaby, B.C., which is also the training and practice ice for the Vancouver Canucks. The program, designed by Mag- nussen, is geared to one-on one lessons. The program, which start- ed in October, is for skaters who are less competitive than the ones she teaches privately at the Van- couver rink. Accident in Grey Officers from the Wingham OPP investigated an accident on County Road 16 in Grey Twp. on Feb. 8 at 8:30 p.m. Milinko Milinkovic, 44, of Ethel was driving a 1986 KW commer- cial truck west on the county road. A 1993 Ford mini van, driven by Constanze Ruttan, 36, of RR1, Atwood, was southbound on Sideroad 34-35. Failing to yield she turned into the path of the Milinkovic truck, which hit the rear end of her car. Ruttan was taken to Listowel hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. She has been charged with failing to yield. "It's also an opportunity to be on the ice with Karen, which is a rare experience," says TenPas. A native of Vancouver, Mag- nussen was the Canadian women's champion in 1968. She withdrew from competition the following year because of injuries, but in 1970 came back to recapture the title, and hold it for the next three years. Magnussen on silver medals in the 1972 Sapporo Olympics and world championships. In 1973 she won the world championship in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. She was the recipient of the Velma Springstead Trophy as Canada's outstanding female athlete in 1971-73 and was awarded the Order of Canada. Magnussen was also an adviser for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. TenPas is not the only member of her family to have had the rare opportunity of sharing the ice with this Canadian athlete. Her 21- month-old niece, Krista, had her first skating lesson during a visit to B.C. with her mom, Trish McKay, Linda's sister. "I'm not very pushy, am I?" jokes TenPas about attempts to get Krista started early. Mag- nussen also spent some time with the youngster. TenPas, who teaches every morn- ing at 6, then goes to her job with an import company, before getting back on the ice until 8:30 that evening, admits her schedule is a bit hectic, but wouldn't have missed it. "When I was in college in Toronto, I spent summers in Van- couver learning from Karen. For that reason we have a lot of the same teaching styles. She has helped me tremendously in what I want to do. It's been very exciting."
