THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1996 PAGE 21. Flowers show bride's personality 4 By Janice Becker Whether, spring blooms, red roses, white lilies or silk sprays, the bouquets carried by the bride and her attendants add colour and beau- ty to a spectacular day. With planning for spring wed- dings underway, many brides-to-be are considering just what it is they want in the floral accent. Local florists emphasize co-ordi- nating flowers with the style of the gown. "If the front of the gown is coy- It is one of the most important and memorable days of any cou- ple's life together, the wedding day and preservation of memories will be a treasure enjoyed for years to come, if a few guidelines are fol- lowed. One of the most essential ingre- dients to achieving a collection of photos which will be cherished is obtaining the services of a profes- sional photographer and booking four to six months in advance. Though a family member or friend may volunteer, it is best to select someone with wedding expe- rience with thorough knowledge of lighting and creative techniques. These are key to capturing the spe- cial, loving moments of the wed- ding day. In selecting a photographer, go to the studio to view the portfolio, dis- cuss desired results and time and location of the ceremony. Any special effects photography should also be considered at this time. Setting the budget at the time of booking, including extra prints as gifts, is important. A firm figure should be agreed upon and the deposit and final payment should be made promptly. When the big day arrives, the photographer should gently take control of photo opportunities, ensuring all family members are included in the shots (with the aid of a chosen relative if desired). The most difficult to arrange is the formal groupings, with deci- sions to be made if it is to be done prior to the ceremony (possibly eliminating the twinkle in the eyes) or immediately after which can interfere with reception spontane- ity. Professional photographers sug- cred with pearls and sequins, the bouquet should not be large," says Shirley Wheeler of Wheels Deco- rating, Brussels. It also seems one of the least known facts is that floral arrange- ments should be carried in one hand and off to the side. "They are to enhance the gown, show off the intricacy, not cover it," says Linda Wilson of Christmas and Country, Blyth. It is also helpful to bring a pic- ture of the gown to assist in design- ing a matching style. gest going to the reception hall, welcoming guests and then having the formal shots taken or have the receiving line at the church and rejoining the guests later at the reception. For family pictures, photogra- phers should be made aware of any sensitive situations such as divorced parents, step-family or a recently deceased grandparent. Above all else, it is important to talk with the photographer, to ensure understanding for both par- ties, then sit back, relax and enjoy that special day. "You want to match a contempo- rary gown with contemporary flow- ers," says Luann Taylor, Luann's Country Flowers, Blyth. Though style may be very impor- tant, it is often the color and type of flower which receives the most consideration. Purple accents have been very common for the last three years or more, particularly for bridesmaids, says Wilson, though yellows seem to be emerging for spring. For brides, the traditional white or champagne roses and lilies are still very common. For Wheeler, she is seeing every colour in the arrangements though red, black and burgundy are pre- dominant. At Country Flowers, white with deep colours as accents are very popular, says Taylor. "It is a time when brides can show their uniqueness, anything and everything goes." A new style which is slowly gaining popularity is the European style of hand-tied bouquets. As always, brides in1996 are very price-conscious, says Taylor. "They are shopping around." Flower orders should be placed approximately two months before the wedding. Right photographer a must Now you can select and co-ordinate your wardrobe with... Dresses by...
