PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1996
By Patricia Wilbee
and Cassie Bootzin
Our annual magazine fund
raising campaign is set to run from
Feb. 2 to 19. Students from Grades
4-8 will be selling subscriptions to
family and friends. Community
support for this major project is
appreciated. Funds help to finance
our instrumental music program as
well as field trips and special
activities for all our students.
On Friday, Jan. 26, four Brussels
students: Cassie Bootzin, Patricia
Wilbee, Justin Ruttan, and Tricia
Teeft participated in a debate
workshop at Clinton High School.
The resolution for debate was that
boards of education should be
required to establish junior high
schools for students in Grades 7, 8
and 9. Mr. Kemp accompanied the
group and acted as a judge. We are
very proud of our debaters.
The impromptu topic was Be It
Resolved That Pizza should be
eaten instead of turkey on special
holidays. It was challenging but
fun. We recommend it to anyone
who enjoys public speaking.
On Thursday, Feb. 1, students
ages 10 and up competed this week
in a free throw competition.
Winners who competed at East
Wawanosh were: Jenna Krotz, Jodi
Sellers, Chris Walker, Evan Horst,
Matthew Kroll, Lee Dilworth,
Nicole Mastnak, Heather Arm-
strong, Nicole Lowe, Sarah Little,
Jared Cardiff, Chris Coulter, Pat
Gilkes, and Josh Jorritsma. The
students have been practising at
recesses under Mr. Kemp's
supervision since the first of
January.
Mr. Hooftman and Mrs. Pcrrie
coached our volleyball teams at the
regional tournament in Wingham
on Jan. 29. Mr. Teall and Mr. Prior
assisted in team selection and
preparation. On the boy's team
were: Justin Ruttan, Mike Comeau,
Andrew Grant, Pat Gilkcs, Mark
Kroll, Josh Gropp, Nathan Garland,
Matthew Cameron, Joel Kellington,
Tyler Bragg, Chris Mason, Josh
Jorritsma, Andrew Garland, and
Cody Nichol.
The girls' team consisted of:
Cassie Bootzin, Patricia Wilbee,
Amy Ross, Krissy Dilworth, Sarah
Seeds, Betty Bodfield, Andrew
Bernard, Amanda Van Beck,
Stephanie Patch, Amy Douma,
Katie Clark, Nicole Bernard, Kate
Kuepfer and Jen Cowan. Both of
the teams played strongly, Well
done, Blazers!
Last fall Brussels Public School
was wired and networked. Now
computers in the library and office
are interconnected. Outlets have
also been placed in each room to
connect computers to the central
system. Last week we gained
Internet access for all computers on
the network. Children now have the
ability to search for current
information from a world wide data
base. Over the next few weeks
junior and senior students will be
trained on the use of this very

Diners
go south
for fun
Brussels Diners Jan. 22 meeting
was attended by 20 members. The
theme, "Gone South" was noted in
the taped music decorations and
food.
The 50/50 draw was won by
Clayton Sauv6 and the door prizes
were won by Jim Smith and
Clayton Sauve.
Eleanor Hemingway dressed in a
lovely two-piece cotton summer
outfit, shared mementoes and
information from her boat cruise.
Members learned about different
spices she brought with her, noting
that nutmeg's outer shell is the
spice, mace.
The program was a video of a
cruise on the Princess Lion "Love
Boat" followed by questions and
discussions with our co-ordinator
Tara Ferguson. Members may not
have come away with a suntan but
they did enjoy imagining themselves
on a mid-January "get away" cruise.
Ag. Soc.
seeks
input
The Brussels Agriculture Society
is extending an open invitation to
anyone with ideas to make the
135th Fall Fair special. They are
asking people to come and voice
ideas on how to improve the fair
(including the parade), or share
fundraising events that they would
like to see in Brussels.
Ag. Society President Dorothy
Cummings says the invitation
extends to current directors also,
for a joint meeting to be held at the
arena, in the upstairs meeting room
Monday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. "The
Agriculture society would also like
ideas on how we can serve you, the
community, throughout the year,
not just at fair time."
This will be an informal meeting,
no long-term commitment and
refreshments will be served.
Yust For You
