Direct from a sold-out run at
Toronto's celebrated Tarragon
Theatre, Allegra Fulton recreates
her acclaimed portrayal of the
extraordinary Mexican painter
Frida Kahlo in Gloria Montero's
Frida K. at the The Grand's
McManus Theatre from Jan. 29 to
Feb. 10.
In Frida K., Gloria Montero has
created a full length portrait of a
complex, raging, hypnotic woman
— compellingly interpreted by
Allegra Fulton. This production has
been hailed by The Toronto Star as
"a brilliant ... breathtaking show."
Frida K. is Frida Kahlo, whose
turbulent life was almost as
legendary a work of art as were her
remarkable paintings. Born in
1907, Frida Kahlo mixed German-
Ann-Marie MacDonald's
hysterically funny romp and

The 50th anniversary of the
White Cane will be celebrated in
1996.
The theme of White Cane Week
is ability, not disability. White
Cane Week is celebrated this year,
Feb. 4 through Feb. 10.
A visually challenged person
carries the White Cane for a variety
of reasons. A White Cane gives the
individual the ability to be free to
travel independently. The White
Cane indicates to the public that the
person carrying it should be given
special consideration when travell-
ing on foot or on public
transportation.
The White Cane is the eyes of the
traveller. Objects on the sidewalk
such as bicycles, toys, automobiles
and building materials are discover-
ed as the person sweeps the area in
Jewish and Mexican identities to
re-invent herself as an original. A
horrendous, mutilating accident in
her adolescence began a lifetime's
succession of operations and
desperate medical treatments, until
she seemed half in love with the
decay of her own body.
As first the mistress and then the
wife of the internationally renowned
Mexican muralist Diego Rivera,
Frida Kahlo espoused his
Communism and passionate ideals,
but struggled fiercely to establish
the integrity of her own art and her
own individual identity. Both had
numerous affairs, with Frida pursu-
ing both men and women. In her
work, images of herself recur in
contexts of both sensuality and
martyrdom. Frida Kahlo, who died
in 1954, has become celebrated
as you've never seen them at Strat-
ford or anywhere else! Desdemona
goes to war ... Romeo falls in love
with the wrong person ...
Find out what happens when a
tenure-hungry professor finds
herself smack-dab in the middle of
Othello and Romeo and Juliet. She
wants to test her theory that these
two tragedies were originally
written as comedies, and that their
cast lists originally included a fool.
And now that she's there, just guess
who the fool is.

The number of tourists visiting
Ontario from the United States,
Europe, Asia and South America
has significantly increased so far
this year, according to Economic
Development, Trade and Tourism
Minister William Saunderson.
"We estimate that tourism
revenue will increase by more than
the projected 3.4 per cent in 1995
due to the continued economic
recovery and attractiveness of the
Canadian dollar," he said.
Preliminary figures from
Statistics Canada indicate that the
number of U.S. residents visiting
Ontario from January to September
increased from 18,370,189 to
20,170,591 which represents an
increase of 9.8 per cent. Total
tourism revenue from the U.S. is
expected to increase by six per cent
in 1995, from $2.718 billion in
1994 to $2.881 billion.
As well, the number of overseas
residents visiting Ontario for the
same period increased from
1,580,610 to 1,713,685 which
represents an increase of 8.4 per
:ent. Total tourism revenue from
the United Kingdom, Germany and
France is expected to increase as
the total number of residents
visiting Ontario from these three
countries from January to
September increased from 567,519
to 620,633. This represents an
increase of 8.4 per cent for the
U.K., 10 per cent for Germany, and
10.8 per cent for France.
Preliminary figures from
Statistics Canada indicate that the
number of Asian residents visiting
Ontario from Japan, Korea and
Taiwan during January to
September increased from 297,639
to 323,893. This represents an
increase of 4.4 per cent for Japan,
21.9 per cent for Korea, and 24.7
per cent for Taiwan.
As well, preliminary figures
indicate that the number of South
American residents visiting Ontario
during the same time period
increased from 54,145 to 68,623
which represents an increase of
26.7 per cent.
In building Ontario's image and
the predisposition to travel to
Ontario, the ministry largely
attributes its success to continued
industry consultation and
partnership arrangements with
travel associations, trade
associations, private sector partners
and other government organiza-
tions including the Canadian
Tourism Commission to position
Ontario as a premier vacation
destination.
Other critical success factors
include effective consumer
advertising and the current "save 30
per cent" print advertising
campaign to highlight the current
favourable exchange rate difference
between the U.S. and Canada.
"International travel to Ontario is
crucial to the long-term health of
Ontario's tourism economy," added
Saunderson. "While travel by
Ontario residents within the pro-
vince is important to the industry,
travel and export earnings from the
United States and overseas visitors
is the cornerstone to a more
globally competitive future for
Ontario's tourism industry."
Ontario's tourism industry is the
province's fourth largest export. It
is the seventh largest employer in
the province with more than
154,000 direct jobs in tourism's
primary sub-sectors. This repre-
sents 3.8 per cent of the province's
total employment.
