It was the Fourth Sunday after
Epiphany at Blyth United Church,
Jan. 28. Rev. Stephen Huntley
conducted the service.
Lois van Vliet and Joann
McDonald greeted the worshippers.
The ushers were Steve and Laurie
Sparling, Brenda Brooks and Janet
Lawrie. Phyllis Boak, director of

The service opened with Call to
Worship, Greetings and the singing
of the opening hymn, For the
Beauty of the Earth.
For the children's time, Rev.
Huntley told a story about "The
Jan. 28 was a special day at
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship.
Elwin Garland led the service. The
Lichty and Demaray families
provided inspirational music and
Rob Demaray gave the message on
"clinging to the vine". Michelle and
Destiny Lichty played a piano and
violin duet for the offertory.
Believers' Baptism was held for
Darlene Hemingway, Sue Siegers
and Hilaria Valdez. Victor Dorsch
Strong Egg". He had with him an
emu egg given to him from a
retired couple he met while in New
South Wales, Australia.
He told the children that they all
come from different places and
look different but they are all the
same inside, as God treats them all
the same.
The choir anthem under the
direction of Boak was, Since Jesus
Came Into My Heart.
The Old Testament Lesson was
from Micah 6: 1-8. The New
Testament Lesson from I
Corinthians I: 18-31 was read by

KateThuntley while the Gospel
reading from Matthew 5: 1-12 was
read by Rev. Huntley.
The sermon was entitled,
"Blessed are the poor!"
Rev. Huntley said the Hebrew
word for 'poor that Jesus used was
'ani. It went through four stages of
development before reaching the
meaning that Jesus had in mind
when he used it in the Sermon on
the Mount.
"The first way would refer to;
people who were without material
wealth. The second would be
without influence and power,
having no clout. The third -
Following the service a very
short Sunday School session was
held and a potluck meal was
enjoyed in the fellowship hall.
Last Sunday evening, a hymn-
sing was held. On Friday evening
after a program at Huronlea, fun,
food and fellowship was enjoyed at
the church.
Next Sunday, Don Vair, from

the morning service at 9:30.
because these people were helpless,
they were often oppressed and,
exploited people. The fourth was
because these people were without
wealth, without help and without
protection. Many of these people
put their trust in God."
God meant everything to them,
Rev. Huntley said. Material things
meant next to nothing as these
people, as Jesus said, were truly
blessed.
In conclusion, Rev. Huntley said,
"God made material things to
enjoy, not to harbour, covet or
worship, or make us blind to the
needs of others, as long as we
maintain a balance and put God
first!" Sing Them Over Again To
Me was sung followed by Commis-
sioning and Benediction.
The flowers were from the
funeral of Luella McGowan who
passed away Jan. 22. She was 96.
