Famous 'Players' E ntertainment take Centre stage `Les Miz' star comes to Blyth Michael Burgess, the sensational singing star of Les Miserables, comes to the Blyth Festival for a single evening performance on Saturday, April 20, at 8 p.m. at the Blyth Memorial Community Hall. A classically-trained actor with a .pure tenor voice, Michael Burgess has had an eclectic entertainment career that has encompassed everything from Shakespeare to singing the national anthem before hockey games. But it is Burgess's attraction to musical theatre that has been the most powerful, and 's proven to be his pathway to "We can be on the front line in determining the way in which change evolves and shapes the future of education for students in Huron County." Speaking via videotape to the trustees at the Jan. 15 meeting, due to a previously-booked vacation, Huron County Board of Education Chair Roxanne Brown encouraged them to be prepared to influence the outcome of change. Realizing boards are in uncertain times, Brown indicated just a few of the areas where change will occur, including amalgamation, The Ausable Bayfield Conservation (ABCA) took a big step towards addressing recent funding cuts at its annual meeting, Thursday. Based on previous cutbacks, the only places left to reduce expenses were through the elimination of staff and programs. The Authority announced that nine positions will be terminated this year. Seven positions and staff will be eliminated effective March 31: Sandra Funk, secret ary - receptionist; Greg Pfaff, training and safety officer; Kate Monk, communications manager; Patti Donnelly, education technician; Doug Hocking, Clean Up Rural Beaches program co-ordinator; Rick Etherington, Clean Up Rural Beaches program technician; Wayne Shaddock, Conservation Areas co-ordinator. The position of planner/inspector (Kelly Vader), will be eliminated effective May 31 and the position of senior planner (Patrick Donnelly) will be eliminated June 30. The senior technician position (Robert Traut) was eliminated on Dec. 22. As part of the staff restructuring, two new positions will be created; a full-time information and education co-ordinator and a six-month contract for a Part VIII Environ- mental Protection Act inspector. These two positions will be filled stardom. As Jean Valjean in over 1,000 performances of Les Miserables, exceptional voice, stage presence, and charisma propelled the Mirvish production to record-breaking box office figures. Following Les Miz, Burgess garnered further critical praise as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha. Most recently, he has embarked on a highly successful solo career as a tour-de-force performer of Broadway, opera, and classical music. Accompanied by a talented pianist, Burgess will perform a variety of favourites restructuring, reduction in trustee and administration numbers, possi- ble disappearance of the fifth year of secondary school and question- able funding for junior kinder- garten. However, Huron County should take pride in their achievements, she says. "We are in the vanguard of 'alter- nate dispute resolution' and in recognition of the fact, have been asked to submit a program proposal for the Youth Congress of the Annual Conference of the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolu- tion, to be held in Anaheim, Cali- soon. Other short term contract positions may be created when funding for specific projects is confirmed. These decisions change the staff structure dramatically. "The responsibilities of individuals will also change to reflect the concept of senior positions doing more day-to-day activities and junior positions taking on more responsibilities. Staff will prepare and present a new structure to the board of directors at its February board meeting," said Tom Prout, general manager. "These are the toughest decisions we've ever had to make." "We have received drastic cuts in transfer payments from the Province: $300,000 or 50 per cent in 1996," said Prout. "We are, however, dealing with these reductions with the intention of continuing to provide environ- mental services. We want to work with our municipalities on conservation work beyond 1997." The Authority would like to meet with each of its municipalities to identify the specific programs they would like the Authority to do. "Based on initial conversations, there is local support from the Shop focally from his vast repertoire when he comes to the Blyth Festival. Though remaining one of the lowest spending boards in the province, Huron County students have scored above average in provincial tests, she says. The board has progressed well in initiatives such as reviewing and developing board policy, improving goal attainment, developing alter- nate methods of program and ser- vice delivery and enhancing parent and community dialogue. Huron County can also be proud of the accomplishments in technol- ogy, says Brown. community, but we need to get specific on what services we provide for the dollars received," said Prout. Other business at the annual meeting included elections. Tom Tomes was acclaimed the chairman for 1996. Tomes represents Grand Bend and Stephen on the board of directors. Murray Keys who represents Hay Twp. and Zurich was acclaimed as vice-chairman. "Both men are keenly interested in the well-being of their communities and will help the ABCA strengthen its connections to all 32-member municipalities," said Prout.
