Depression affects 670,000 Canadians Some 570,000 working Canadians — five per cent of the workforce are affected by depres- sions. Figures from Canadian insurance companies highlight that depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders for which long term disability claims are made. Long term disability claims for depression cost an average of $100 for every employee they cover. That's an average of $126 million per year, yet depression can be successfully treated when it's recognized early. When a depressed mood persists for a few weeks, deepens and eventually starts interfering with work and other aspects of everyday life, it has become an illness or clinical depression. In the workplace, a person with depression may exhibit many of the following signs. * difficulty in making decisions * decreased productivity * inability to concentrate * decline in dependability * unusual increase in errors at work * being prone to accidents * frequent tardiness, increased "sick" days * lack of enthusiasm for work Someone who has been experiencing many of these signs for a few weeks or more should seek help immediately. To be supportive to someone in the workplace who could be experiencing depression, it is important to try and maintain a usual working relationship. Make sure the individual is aware of his or her value to co-workers, offer encouragement, and pay genuine complements. And, tactfully encourage that person to consider help. If the person is already getting help, support their efforts. Employers can help an employee deal with depression by helping to educate employees about the importance of untreated depression and, by encouraging those with depression to seek help from a number of sources. Employers who are sensitive to depression will notice a reduction in health care costs and an overall improvement in the performance of their employees. If you would like to learn more about depression in the workplace the Canadian Mental Health Association has a presentation which has been designed to help people recognize the signs of depression and how to offer appropriate support to employees. This presentation can be booked by calling 482-9311. Doesn't it make sense to do something? BUSINESS OPPS. TRAVEL AGENCY - INVESTMENT $14,995. Full Training and Ongoing Support.
