Crusaders down top 2
The Blyth Tyke Team played in
four games this weekend.
On Saturday, they played a
league game against Brussels and
came up on the short end of a 5-0
score.
On Friday and Sunday, they
played in a tournament in
Kurtzville. They played three
games against St. Jacobs, Elma
Logan and St. Marys. In this tour-
nament, scores were not kept and
each player received a trophy for
participating.
Coach Rick Elliott said his play-
ers all played well and enjoyed the
experience.
The Brussels Crusaders enjoyed
their most successful weekend of
Senior Hockey this season with
wins over the top two teams in the
league and hold a 13-6-2 record,
good enough for third place in
WOAA Senior A Hockey action.
Friday night in Ripley, Steve
Fritz scored his second of the night
1:20 into overtime for a 5-4 win
over the first place Wolves. Brad
Beuermann, Corey McKee and Ron
Strome also scored for Brussels
while league scoring leader Sean
Burton scored three and set up a
fourth for Ripley.
Burton's third of the night came
with one minute remaining in third
period action. The game featured
end-to-end action throughout the
game, including an unsuccessful
penalty shot attempt by the
Crusaders' Greg Mulvey, who hit
the goal post, during second period
action.
Steve Fritz also added two assists
as did Corey McKee while Tom
McDonald set up three.
Saturday, Brian Campbell scored
the hattrick in leading the
Crusaders to a 7-3 win over the
second place Wiarton Redmen.
Steve Fritz with two, Chad
Nicholls, and Tim Fritz also scored
for Brussels, while Kevin McArter
assisted on three.
The Crusaders travel to Arthur
Friday night and return home to
meet Clinton Saturday at 7:30.
Bulls get
doughnut
In the third last regular game of
what has been a roller-coaster sea-
son, the Brussels Bulls were shut-
out after travelling to play in
Wingham on Sunday afternoon.
The Ironmen showed no mercy
as they strong-armed their way to a
5-0 victory.
The Bulls play two more games
before playoffs begin. Friday night
they face the Mt. Forest Patriots in
an away game, then return home
Sunday to host the Walkerton
Blackhawks in an afternoon con-
test.

Belgrave Atoms edge Brussels

The Belgrave Atoms won a close
5-3 game against the Brussels
Houseleague team last Tuesday.
Scott Folkard and Chad Cook led
the Belgrave effort, with three
points each. Goals were scored by
Folkard (two), Travis Hopper, Paul
Garniss and Cook. Assists were
given to Cook (two), Matt Rochet-
ta, Paul Walker, Matt Bromley and
Folkard.
Belgrave Trainer Gord Folkard
said the game was bumpy but fast-
paced, and very exciting.
For the visiting Brussels squad,
Midgets
tune up
for playoff
action
The Brussels Midgets tuned up
for the playoffs this past week
capturing one win and a tic.
On Wednesday, they played host
to Zurich and came on the winning
side of a 4-2 score. Dean Walker
and Corey Newman scored a pair
of goals each with assists going to
Mike Dauphin (two), Tim Stricken,
Trevor Meade and Tim McLean.
On Thursday they played to a
close 2-2 tie against Milverton.
Dauphin and Newman scored for
Brussels with assists going to
Stricken (two) and Dauphin.
Coach Gary Daupin said both
games were well played and should
help prepare the team for the
upcoming playoffs.
They open their league playoffs
against Howick. They will also take
part in a tournament in Ripley this
weekend. Their first opponent will
be Belmore.
Kyle Stephenson scored in the first
with Tyler Campbell adding two in
the third.
In continuing league play for the
Brussels Atoms Houseleague,
Brooklyn Wheeler earned a shutout
against Monkton, in a blowout
game Jan, 18, while her teammates
racked up 11 in support.
Off to a quiet start in the first, the
visiting Brussels team took a one
goal lead when Jeff Linton, assisted
by Joel Hemingway pushed one
past the goalie.
Brussels exploded in the second
and third, scoring five in each
frame.
Points were tallied by Stephen-
son, Sean Hoegy (two) and Hem-
ingway (two). Assists were earned
by Brittany Kellington, Jimmie
Franken and Hoegy.
Hemingway added a hattrick in
the third to top off a five-goal
game, while Linton contributed two
of his own to end with three netters.
Capturing assists in the final
frame were Brandon Dixon, Robbie
McClure, Kellington and Hoegy
(two).
Riding high off their win, Brus-
sels welcomed Zurich to town, Jan.
20, only to send them home defeat-
ed.
Dixon bulged the twine early, to
put Brussels up 1-0 at the end of
the first.
After Zurich tied the score mid-
way through the second, Brussels
rebounded with two in the dying
minutes when Matt Clarkson and.
Hemingway each put the puck over
the line.
The hometowners quickly took a
4-1 lead less than four minutes into
the third when Dixon scored his
second of the game, assisted by
Kellington and McClure.
Campbell brought the total to 5-1
before Zurich managed to get two
by Wheeler in the final two minutes
of the game.
Other assists in the game came,
from Stephenson and Linton.
