THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1996 Mercy The Goderich goalie appears to be begging for mercy as his teammate jostles in front of the net with one Brussels Crusader, while another sneaks in from behind. Some late game action brought this into the win column for the hometown Crusaders. Wheeler scores 2 for Crusaders The Blyth Juveniles split two games last weekend. On Saturday, they lost a tough 5- 4 game to Lucknow. Mike Salverda led the Blyth effort with a hattrick. Kurt Kumm accounted for Blyth's other goal. Assists were awarded to Nathan Loder, Chris Howson and Mark Wilson. Coach Neil Salverda said his team had a slow start in the third, giving up three unanswered goals, which proved to be the difference. Blyth scored twice more, but could not catch up. On Sunday, they made up for The Belgrave Atoms closed out last week's play with two victories. On Tuesday they hosted Elma Logan, and came away with a solid 7-0 victory. Goals were scored by Chad Cook (three), Trevor Koehler (two), Paul Garniss and Paul Walker. Matt Cowan earned the shutout. On Saturday, they played host to Wingham. This time, they fought to a much closer 2-1 victory. After Wingham took the lead, with a goal at 7:38 of the second, Walker tied the score with a goal at their loss with a close 2-1 victory over Paisley. Howson scored Blyth's first goal, assisted by Wilson and Mike Heffron. The winning goal was scored at 11:48 of the third, unassisted, by Benji Hakkers. Coach Salverda said, "The game was close from beginning to end. The third period was quite rough, and Blyth had three players ejected. This left them with only six skaters for the last seven minutes." He gave these players credit for their tenacity and ability to hold off the Paisley squad. 4:26. Cook scored the winning goal at 12:42 of the third. Manager Gord Folkard said, "This was a very fast-paced game, characterized by back-and-forth play. The outcome was in question for almost the whole game." The team takes to the Belgrave ice this Tuesday, against Brussels, Thursday, against Zurich, and Saturday, against Stephen Twp. The Tuesday and Thursday games start at 1 p.m., while the Saturday contest commences at 11 a.m. Belgrave Atoms close week with 2 victories Five unanswered second period powerplay goals gave the Brussels Crusaders an 8-3 win over the Goderich Pirates Saturday night. Dean Wheeler with two, Ron Strome, Jim Oster, Brian Campbell, Tom McDonald, Phil Livermore The Brussels Midgets had a busy schedule last week, with two league games and a tournament. On Wednesday, they hosted Blyth and came away with a 4-3 victory. Brussels goals were scored by- Paul Cummings, Jeff Lewing- ton, Brett Fischer and Trevor Huffman. Assists were given to Lewington (two), Cummings, Fischer, Huffmann and Mike Dauphin Coach Gary Dauphin commend- ed his players for a good effort, pointing out that they came on from a 3-2 deficit to win the game. On Thursday, they travelled to Milverton for a contest against a combined Milverton/Elma Logan squad. This time, they came on the short end of a close 3-2 score. Brussels goals were scored by Lewington and Trevor Mead, with assists going to Lewington, Dauphin and Scott Clarkson. On Sunday, the team travelled to Glencoe for a one-day tournament. In their first game, they defeated PeeWee Reps earn shutout The Brussels PeeWee Rep team won a convincing 6-0 contest against Goderich on Friday evening. Goals were scored by Brian Oldfield (two), Joel Kellington, Chris Blake, Chad Fischer and Tyler Bragg. Assists were credited to Kellington (two), Bragg, Blake, Carla Hunt, Phil Affolter, Matt McLellan, and Andy Van Beek. Matt McCal' Darned the shutout. Coach Murray Kellington said the team got a well-deserved win, given the heavy defeats they suffered the week before. and Tim Fritz scored for Brussels, while Bill Peters and Todd Papple with two replied for Goderich. Livermore also added three assists while Wheeler set up two. Jay Evershed stopped 28 shots for Sarnia 4-2. Dauphin led the Brussels effort, with two goals and an assist. Lewington and Mead accounted for the other two goals, with Mead getting an assist as well. In their second game, the boys lost a tough 3-2 game to London North. Dauphin and Tim Stricker scored the goals for Brussels, with Dauphin, Huffman, Josh Beuer- mann and Corey Newman getting assists. Coach Dauphin said his team had the game in hand, but briefly lost their concentration and, with it, the the win while Brussels had 31 attempts on the Pirate net. Brussels travels to Ripley Friday night to meet the first place Wolves, then returns home Saturday to play the Wiarton Redmen at 7:30. game. With a two-man advantage, Brussels allowed two short-handed goals and gave the game to - London. Coach Dauphin said that, despite this loss, the tournament proved to be a good experience for the team. "They were able to play teams they had never seen before and, since this tournament was outside the WOAA, were able to experience a more fast-paced style of game." The Midgets return to the Brussels ice this Wednesday, at 9 p.m. against Zurich.
