By John Schedler As the new year begins there is only a trickle of new releases and many of those like Showgirls and Dr. Jekyll and Ms Hyde fall into the best avoided category. So it was, with many thanks, that I was pleased to receive as gifts, several new versions of favourite movies. The restored 30th Anniversary edition of My Fair Lady ****(Fox), in particular the deluxe widescreen boxed set is simply wonderful. At the time of its original release the film drew mixed reviews from critics, but even with the passage of time I found the movie to stand up very well. After all, most of the performers, Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn, Wilfred Hyde-White, Stanley Holloway and others, were at the top of their form. The widescreen transfer is a definite improvement over all the other tape versions available, brilliantly restoring the film's original theatrical look. In addition to the movie itself the package includes another hour long cassette hosted by the late Jeremy Brett, featuring behind the scenes footage, interviews and recently discovered versions of Audrey Hepburn (her singing voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon in the final version) singing several songs from the film. Other items included are lithographs of original sketches, a book by costume designer Cecil Beaton and six 70mm frames struck from the film's original camera negative. All in all this My Fair Lady package would make a great addition to the library of fans of musical films. With the release of the new pirate movie Cutthroat Island in theatres I decided to check out Treasure Island **** (Disney - $19.95), the quintessential version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic boy's adventure. I was only 10 the first time I saw Treasure Island and while the story is great, what made the film most memorable for me was the character of Long John Silver, unforgettably played by Robert Newton. As a matter of fact Newton became so closely linked to this character that he also reprised the role in Long John Silver a few years later as well as in a television series. This latest transfer of Treasure Island, from the original negative shows off technicolor to its best advantage with exceptionally rich and vivid colours. Not only does this version look better visually, but it is also complete after being available in only a cut version which toned down some of the violence in order to obtain a G rating a few years ago. (Rated PG) It was also a pleasure to see The Right Stuff (Warner - $44.95), an epic about the origins of the U.S. space program adapted from the best selling book by Tom Wolfe. This over three hour epic was a box office failure in 1983, but I've always been fond of it and now that a beautiful widescreen transfer has become available on laserdisc I can enjoy The Right Stuff again and again. (Rated PG) Other recent new releases worth a look include The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill And Came Down A Mountain ****(Alliance), a delightful comedy about a surveyor who determines a nearby mountain is actually a hill, much to the dismay of the local townsfolk. The cast includes Hugh Grant, Tara Fitzgerald and Colm Meany. (Rated PG) Catherine Deneuve stars in Belle De Jour ****(Alliance) Luis Brunuel's 1967 classic about a housewife who moonlights as a prostitute. Extremely controversial when first released, the film has lost little of its impact. (Rated R - English subtitles) video f9I.X. IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY... J.R.'S GAS BAR ag TAKE OUT LTD. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1996 Bayfield edges Blyth Atoms in see-saw battle The Blyth Atoms played in two close contests this past week, and came out of it with one tie and one loss. On Wednesday, they hosted Hensall and played to a 4-4 tie. The home side held a 3-1 lead halfway through the third. Blyth goals were scored by Martin Sturzenegger, unassisted and his first of the year, at 6:31 of the first, Micah Loder at 8:49 of the second, and Robbie Archambault at 13:09 of the third. Assists on the second and third goals were given to Archambault, Steven Van Amersfoort and Jeff Carter. Hensall stormed back to tie the game, with goals at 12:47 and 10:10, before Blyth was to tally again. At 8:03, Carter scored unassisted and restored Blyth's lead. Unfortunately for the home side, the victory was not to be. With less than five minutes left to play, Blyth was penalized for using an illegal stick and opened the door for the visitors. At 3:41, Hensall scored and tied the game at 4-4. Blyth coach Tom Jarrett said his players played very well•during the first two periods, but fell apart in the third. With only two penalties called in the game, he was impressed with the disciplined play of both teams. On Saturday, Blyth hosted Bayfield in what turned out to be a heartbreaking loss. Bayfield jumped to a 3-0 lead, scoring all three goals with less than six minutes left in the opening frame. Blyth responded with two of their own before the end of the period. Cole Stewart scored both goals, at 2:12 and 2:04. The second goal was assisted by Justin Rinn. Blyth added three more unanswered goals. With only 57 seconds left in the second, Shaun Henry scored, assisted by Nick Courtney. Henry scored again at The Brussels Midgets had a tough week, losing two games.
