Entrepreneurs graduate from business course Thirteen students recently graduated from the 10-week Introduction to Small Business course, many of whom plan to proceed with implementing the skills they developed. Business ideas ranged from a cafe featuring bagels, to a greenhouse and garden centre and a store featuring men's and women's fashions and lingerie. The course, sponsored by the. Canada Employment Centre was delivered by the Computer Training Academy in Clinton. Lead instructors were Alison Lobb and George and Pat Morfopoulos, although numerous guest speakers added their expertise. Training was designed so individuals, considering starting their own business, could under- stand and address the many issues involved in self-employment. They began the process by evaluating their original idea in terms of current business trends and market influences, and their own entrepreneurial characteristics. SegmentS followed on marketing Grey Twp. council held its first meeting of 1996 and made the following appointments to local boards and committees for 1996: Seaforth Hospital Board, Howard Hackwell; Brussels Medical-Dental Centre Board, Dale Newman, Graeme MacDonald; BMG Board of Recreation Management, Alvin McLellan, Kevin Deitner, Mervyn Bauer and Julie Mitchell; Community Oriented Policing committee, John Saxon, Tim Prior and Robin Dunbar, Walton Landfill Committee, Helen Cullen, Robin Dunbar; Huron County Farm & Home Safety Association, Mervyn and promotions, record keeping and money management, types of business ownership and pertinent regulations, as well-as interpersonal skills topics such as time management and improving customer relations. Along with the busim.ss training, participants completed computer training in Windows 3.1 and Microsoft Works, and were introduced to the wonders of Internet. The development of an idea to a detailed business plan progressed slowly and during the evolvement of the course, several participants modified their original idea significantly. Some even determined that -their plans were not viable at-this time. A local graduate, Laura Hoggart of Londesboro along with her husband, is ultimately considering expanding their hobby of crafting fine furniture and wood products such as cabinet, wall units, vanities into a full-time business. The participants also became certified in the first SuperHOST Bauer; North Huron Planning Committee, Robin Dunbar; Huron County Plowmen's Association, Leona Armstrong and the Ethel Minor Ball Committee, Gary Boyer, Brenda Boyer, Don Cochrane, Evon Cochrane, Wendy Clark and Brad Knight. Council passed a bylaw to revise the fee schedule for planning applications to reflect the increases in costs to Huron County. The cost for a zoning bylaw amendment application or minor variance application will rise to $925 and $650 respectively from $775 and $500 respectively. program delivered in the county. This program, presented by the Ontario Tourism Education Corporation and sponsored locally by the Huron Tourism Association. is designed to develop and expand customer relations skills in the business community.
