Cameron McMillan Brussels-Ethel United Churches We are now in the midst of winter. For many people, this is a depressing, gloomy season. Before we can step outdoors, we must search for our mitts, boots, hat and warm overcoat. Once outside, the icy cold wind blows around our face, chilling us to the bone. We carefully search our steps, hoping that there is no ice underfoot that will give us a hard fall. There are too many cold, cloudy snow days. The snow came six The service at Blyth United, Jan. 7 was the first Sunday after Epiphany with Rev. Stephen Huntley taking the service. This was his first since returning home from his exchange in Australia. Greeters were Vera Hesse!wood and Feme McDowell. Ushers were Earl and Shirley Fyfe and Laurie Sparling. Phyllis Boak, director of music, was organist. Rev. Huntley opened with Call to Worship, announcements, then expressing his delight in being back home in Blyth despite the weather. For the children's time, Rev. Huntley told the story of how the earth and sky touched together with the world being dark. He also told them how the Aborigines in Australia, many years ago, invented the boomerang. Tell Me the Story of Jesus was sung by the choir under the Separate school board elects officers hperessb... With the beginning of the new year, so comes the election of new officers to the Huron-Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board. Mike Miller, past vice-chair, rep- resentative of Stanley and Hay Twps. and Zurich, Hensall and Bayfield, was elected to the post of chair while Michael Dack, repre- sentative for Stratford, was acclaimed vice-chair, at the inaugu- ral meeting, Dec. 4. The board appointed Donnelly and Murphy as solicitors. The Executive Committee stated, at the Dec. 12 meeting of the board, that it would contact the London- Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin Roman Catholic Separate School Boards to discuss the viability of a Catholic Educational Services co- operative for London Diocese East. The board approved the purchase of video monitoring equipment, at a cost of $2,309.40, for the eight board-owned buses. weeks before the first official day of winter this year. It seems like it has been with us for a very long time and that spring still lies a long time away. We all long to live in a perfect world, where the sun always shine and the temperature is always 25 degrees cclsius. However, we do not find that kind of world here in Canada, nor, indeed, anywhere else. We must learn to cope with this bitterly cold country that we live in. Many people try to make winter direction of Mrs. Boak. Rev. Huntley, as part of his sermon, spoke about the life of the church in Australia. He noted that the Uniting Church of Australia was a relatively young church and still seeking its way after only 17 years of existence. He served three churches while there, Bowral Parish in Bowral, Mittagong and Kanaloon, including chaplaincy work at a local correctional facility. These churches are located in the southern highlands of New South Wales, approximately 1 1/2 miles south of Sydney, Australia. He said weather watchers would be interested to note that this part of Australia experienced unusual weather as well. It was much cooler than normal with only a few hot days throughout the spring and summer. This unusual weather also bituaries L CLARENCE PETER HOLLINGER Peter Hollinger of Wingham passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital, London on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 1996, in his 62 year. When the snow and cold weather comes, they get out of their houses and head for the ski slopes, the skating rinks or the snowmobile trails. They make the best of this special season, that we find only in this country and only at this time of year. For the frail and elderly, activities outdoors may not be possible. However, they and all of us, can enjoy those special beauties that we see only at this season. The stars shine in the black night sky. brought much welcomed relief in the form of rain which relieved many acres of Australia's 'drought stricken' for five years. Rev. Huntley concluded his talk by speaking of the fascination we have for babies. "When a little baby is in a crowd" he said "peoples' demeanours change. Frowns turn to smiles, heavy hearts are softened. This fascination includes the Christ child and sometimes we do not equate the baby of the incarnation with the adult of the crucifixion, "Who is Jesus for us today?" The moon escapes from behind a cloud and sends a sparkling glitter across our snow covered fields. Then there are the thaws which we all enjoy. A sunny, cloudless day comes along, the wind dies down, the temperature rises and we feel a difference in the air. Although the winter is long, eventually it ends and spring appears. The icy, cold weather ends, the snowpile starts to shrink, the first flower appears at the edge of our house. Shortly after that, the grass has all turned a beautiful shade of green, and the spring flowers are showing forth their beautiful colours. God in his wisdom has planned all these beautiful seasons. Each one has different features which we can enjoy. We need to learn to make the best of whatever situation we are in, to enjoy it and appreciate it. Have a happy, healthy winter. Rev.
