Brussels Atoms capture A title Brussels Bulls fans had a lot to see this week with home games Jan. 2, 4 and 7. In the Tuesday match-up the team hosted the Hanover Barons and narrowly missed victory by a 5-4 score. Hanover's Tyson Stapels notched a hattrick for his team, while Derck Hastie and Jason Howes each added one. For the Brussels effort it was new Bulls Kyle Shauber, Josh Alexan- der and Jason Heipel. Another close one was not to be theirs two days later when the Wingham Ironmen edged the Bulls 2-1. A late game call kept the home 'team from tieing it, when the refer- ee said the net came off before the puck was sunk. Scoring for Brus- sels was Dan Williams, while Winghares points went to Chris The Brussels Atom Rep won the consolation championship at a tournament held in Clifford this past weekend. On Friday evening, the team dropped a very disappointing 4-3 game to Durham. Brussels had a 3- 2 lead entering the final minute of play, only to lose the game by giving up two goals in the final 45 seconds. Brussels goals were scored by Nolan Krotz (two) and Darrell McClure. Assists were credited to Mark Hunter, Tyler Campbell and Darryl Houston. In their second game, they bounced back to beat Clifford 6-1. Goals in this game were scored by Krotz (three), McClure, Hunter and Lee Dilworth. Assists were given to Campbell (two), Krotz, Hunter, Bryce Wedow and Scott McDonald. In the consolation final the offense continued, this time carrying them to an 8-0 victory over Normanby Twp. Krotz, Dilworth and Kyle Stephenson combined for five goals and four assists. Additional goals were scored by Campbell (two), and Houston. irther assists were credited to McClure (two), Hunter Buchanan and Jason Becker. Sunday's contest was against the Walkerton Blackhawks. This time the power was in the home team's favour with a win of 5-3. Travis Baier, Tim Beyer, Brian McNichol, Williams and Heipel each contributed to the Bulls' effort. Scoring for Walkerton were Dcvin McArthur, Dave Flock and Adam Bonneveld. Coach Charlie Smith was pleased with the team's effort, noting how close the outcomes were. "The games were all examples of good hockey," he said. The team is back in Brussels on Sunday for a match against the Kincardine Bulldogs. Game time is 2 p.m. and Ken McCallum. Bryce Wedow earned his first shutout of the season. Coach Alan Krotz commended his players for their ability to respond to their first-game loss to Durham, and credited Scott McDonald and Joel Hemingway for strong defensive play. Brussels Atoms Houseleague fin- ished 1995 with two resounding wins over their opponents. Elma-Logan came to town Dec. 23 to face off against a fired-up squad. Jeff Linton popped in the first of two at 3:16 of the first, assisted by Brandon Dixon. The hometeam took a 2-0 lead into the second after a goal by Tyler Campbell, assisted by Joel Hemingway, with 5:26 left in the frame. Brussels exploded in the third, blasting five past the Elma-Logan netminder. Matthew Clarkson slid the first one in at 1:16, followed just 30 sec- onds later by a Hemingway goal. Before the half way mark in the period, Brussels jumped to a 5-0 lead when Hemingway scored his second of the game, unassisted. Campbell and Linton added two more to top up the score at 7-0. Earning assists in the third were Hemingway, Clarkson, Dixon, Brit- tany Kellington and Daniel Cam- eron. Brooklyn Wheeler did an excel- lent job in net, earning a shutout. In an exhibition game against St. Marys on Dec. 30, Brussels Atoms once again showed their strength in scoring. Wheeler, again between the posts, held the opponents to just one goal, late in the first, while her teammates slapped 10 past the vis- iting squad. Just past the midpoint of the first, Kyle Stephenson scored the first of what would become a hattrick for the match. After assisting on the Stephenson goal, Hemingway bulged the twine three and a half minutes later. Campbell would follow suit with 1:30 remaining in the frame. He was assisted by Cameron and Clarkson. Brussels took a commanding lead through the second, scoring five to bring the tally to 8-1. Scoring in the second came from Stephenson, Hemingway (two), Linton and Robbie McClure. Assists were captured by Heming- way, Kellington, Stephenson and Campbell (two). Stephenson and Hemingway both earned hattricks when they scored in the third, Stephenson's coming at 3:55 and Hemingway's at 10:06. To top off an astounding seven point game, Hemingway earned an assist on the Stephenson goal while Kellington got credit for an assist on Hemingway's. In continuing league play, the Brussels squad met Zurich on home ice, Jan. 5. Off to a quick two goal lead less than half way through the opening frame, Brussels took a 3-1 lead into the third. Sean Hoegy scored both netters in the first, assisted by Brandon Blake and Linton. Linton pushed the puck past the netminder at 3:45 of the second. Earning assists were Dixon and Hoegy. Zurich came out in the third ready to battle back, scoring eight minutes into the period. Hoegy added one more to his tally for a hattrick but it was not enough to hold off the attackers. Zurich followed with two goals at 8:39 and 12:19, leaving the Brus- sels squad to settle for the 4-4 tie. In tournament play, the Brussels team travelled to Clifford Jan. 6, 7, to challenge for the local league championship. The road to success started in the contest against Walkerton. Brussels began the scoring, at 3:25 of the first with Walkerton tying the match in the dying sec- onds. Trading goals in the second, Brussels went into the third facing a 3-2 deficit, but was able to tie it up at 3-all with under three minutes left in regulation time.
