THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1996 ports Juveniles' Bromley earns two hattricks Rush on the net The Blyth Juveniles won the championship at a tournament in Walkerton last Tuesday and Wednesday. In their first game, they won a close 4-3 contest against Monkton. Blyth goals were scored by Mike Heffron, Greg Blok, Mike Bromley and Chris Stewart. Coach Neil Salverda said it was a very suspenseful game, and close from beginning to end. In their second contest they took advantage of a sluggish Brampton squad, coming away with a convincing 10-5 victory. Blyth players tallied three hattricks in the game. Heffron, Bromley and Stewart accounted for nine of Blyth's 10 goals, with Tim Lyons scoring another. The Blyth Atoms travelled to Bayfield for a pre-Christmas contest on Dec. 23. After losing 6-1 to them in a previous game, they responded this time by defeating their opponents 5-4. After Bayfield took the lead in the first, Cole Stewart tied the game at 4:56, assisted by Justin Rinn and Nick Courtney. Bayfield took the lead again, at 9:24 of the second. At 7:53, Michael Bean tied the score. Assists on that goal were granted to Micah Loder and Martin Sturzenegger. Blyth finally took the lead at 14:49 of the third when Cole Stewart put the puck in the net, assisted by Loder and Kirk Stewart. Bayfield then responded with two unanswered goals at 12:58 and 12:15. Despite taking three penalties in the final 10 minutes, however, Blyth came back to take the Joel Kellington's second period hat-trick led the Brussels Bantams to a 9-1 win over visiting Goderich Wednesday night. Mike Cooper, Cory Bragg, Shawn Engel, Ryan Stnith, Sam Zahnd and Phil Affolter also scored for the Bantams who scored six times in the second for the win. Stephen Oldfield lost the shutout bid early in third period action. The Bantams have four games remaining in their schedule. They are at home to Seaforth on Wednesday, Jan. 3, then travel to Goderich the following Wednes- day. Tykes win 12-3 The Belgrave Tykes won a convincing 12-3 game this past weekend against Lucknow. Goals were scored by Jeremy Robinson (five), S-..ott Phillips (three), Christopher Campbell, Kyle Nixon, Mark McCracken and Kevin Freiburger. In their third game the team put out a solid effort against Meaford, and came away with a 5-2 win. Goals were scored by Heffron (two), Stewart, Benji Hakkers and Mark Wilson. Coach Salverda was very impressed with his team in this game. They had only two penalties in the game, and scored all five of their goals in the final frame. In the tournament final, Blyth met a squad from Teeswater. Bromley tallied his second hattrick of the tournament, and Stewart added another as the team went on to a convincing 4-1 victory. Coach Salverda commended his team for their solid effort through the whole tournament, and gave credit to goaltender Craig Bayton for his solid play. victory. Cole Stewart scored two short-handed goals, at 7:55 and 3:39, assisted by Loder, Courtney and Kirk Stewart. Last Saturday, the boys showed strong discipline again, salvaging a 4-4 tie against Clinton. Blyth scored only one goal in the first two periods. At 9:16 of the second Shaun Henry, assisted by Courtney and Cole Stewart, scored for Blyth. At the end of two periods, however, the score was 4-1 for Clinton, then with less than 10 minutes to play in the third, Blyth came back to gain the tie. At 9:11, Cole Stewart scored, assisted by Steven Van Amersfoort. At 6:47, Stewart tallied again, this time assisted by Loder and Jeff Carter. Finally, at 5:46, Blyth tied the game, when Robbie Archambault scored an unassisted goal. Coach Tom Jarrett was very impressed with his team's effort, and their ability to come from behind in each game. Home games against Mitchell and Milverton complete their 95-96 season with playoffs to start in February. In a valiant effort, the Brussels Bulls narrowly missed tieing the first place Mt. Forest Patriots in a home game Thursday night. After a goal by Tim Beyer, assisted by Greg Fritz, the Bulls were down by one going into the second period. Then already down two players, who were out with injuries, a late period brawl cleared the Bulls bench by three more for The Blyth Pee-Wee Houseleague team travelled to Belmore on Dec. 28 to take part in a one day tourna- ment and came home with the championship trophy. Their first game against Lucknow ended in a score of 8-0. Goal scorers for Blyth were Matt Anderson, Jeff Klassen, Shawn Bromley, Joel Arthur, Mike Ber- nard and Jeremy Van Amersfoort. Shut out goalies Ryan Lee and Aaron Bakker did a great job between the pipes. The wait between games caught up with the Blyth boys and found them dogging the Wiarton team, for their second game, all the way to the final buzzer. The score was 5-4 in Blyth's favour with goals scored by Bromley, Anderson and Van Amersfoort. The last game against Wingham was a well played effort and showed in the final score of 4-1. The Blyth team wowed the crowd with their tremendous ability, passing the puck around with everyone playing their positions properly. Goals were scored by Derek Cook, Anderson and Klassen. MVP for the game was goalie Bakker, who played the whole game and definitely deserved the award given! Also, they acknow- ledge the Blyth Legion Ladies for their sponsorship and the coaches and parents of the team. Brussels PeeWees captured the win "B" title at a tournament in Belmore recently. Brussels first game was against Port Elgin. Brian Oldfield opened the scoring in the first with assists going to Chris Coulter and Paul Linton. Then Port Elgin scored one in the second and three in the third to jump well ahead and take the win. The second game was the "B" semi-finals against Teeswater. There were three Brussels goals in the first. The first was shot through the winning one, letting the Patriots go home 3-2 victors. Taylor was credited by manage- ment with helping to keep the Bulls in the game stopping almost two times as many shots as the Patriots netminder faced. Tuesday, Jan. 2 the Bulls hosted Hanover, while Thursday the Wingham Ironmen will be in town to take on the Bulls. the five hold by Oldfield from Coulter. Marc Fischer on an end to end rush came in with a top corner shot from Matt Cameron, then Oldfield scored again with help from Carla Hunt and Robert Kerr. There were three more goals in the second. Coulter snapped one in from Andy VanBeek and Jason Armstrong. Oldfield got the hattrick with the assist from Stephen Todd. Kerr then scored from Oldfield. Matt Elliott came up with the shutout. In the finals they played Ripley. Oldfield started the scoring with the only goal in the first. Oldfield scored again in the second. Cameron scored in the second with a spectacular wrist shot past the goalie. Oldfield finished off his hattrick from Todd and Armstrong, then Todd scored from Oldfield and Coulter. The shutout was shared by Elliott and Tim Harrison. Brussels Bull Brandon Alviano, Number 8, takes out some of the competition as he slides across the ice, leaving just one Mt. Forest Patriot between his teammate and the goal. Mt. Forest took home a 3-2 victory in the Dec. 28 game.
