This award is in recognition of the Festival's hard work, in co- operation with the many volun- teers, board members and broad community who contribute to the •theatre, says Janet Amos, Artist Director for the Blyth Festival. Amos announced Dec. 18, the Blyth Festival was one of three recipients of the prestigious new Lieutenant-Governor's Awards for the Arts, in the amount of $25,000. Created by Lieutenant-Governor Henry Jackman, through a $1 mil- lion contribution from the Henry N.R. Jackman Foundation to the Ontario Arts Council Foundation, the award is oven to professional, A Brussels businessman was fined $150,000 after pleading guilty to charges of income tax eva- sion in Goderich's provincial court, Monday. Jackman developed the award in the belief of building endowment to support artistic activities in the province and to challenge others in the private sector to follow his lead. "This award will be a real shot in the arm for the Festival," says Amos. It reflects on the organiza- tion and how it is run, but will also bring us to the attention of corpo- rate sponsors and foundations in Toronto. These sponsors are vital to fundraising for thzatres such as Blyth, she says. Lynda Lentz (Development Co- ordinator) works very hard to eral schemes of tax evasion. The charges date to between Feb. 28, 1989 and July 8, 1993. Background supplied by Revenue Canada stated that Yoon had not reported prescription sales-paid by insurance companies and some individuals, then appropriated the funds by describing them in the company books as shareholder investments. Yoon also did not include income rebate cheques from the suppliers of generic drugs, for which he appropriated the funds. In another scheme Revenue Canada discovered that Yoon had written cheques from the company bank account to himself and these amounts were charged to the com- pany's purchase expense. The cheques were deposited in Yoon's obtain sponsors and it was her effort in putting together the appli- cation for the award which resulted in our receiving it, says Amos. "I imagined we would get it sometime, but not in the first year. It is a credit to the (broad) commu- nity which is interested and sup- portive of the theatre," Amos says. "This is a wonderful testament to the outstanding work of the board members and volunteers. The many partnerships we have in our com- munity are all part of what makes the Festival strong and resilient," says Board President Keith Roul- ston. Along with the application pre- savings account. When the cheques were received by the company after they were cleared by the bank, Yoon erased his name and wrote or typed names of suppliers to make them appear as legitimate purchas- es. Dividend and interest income from investments and loans were also not reported by Yoon and/or the company, according to Revenue Canada. Yoon Stores Limited was fined $41,754.49 and Yoon was fined $109,025.25 or four months in jail. The company and Yoon were given nine months to pay. pared by Lentz, letters of support were received from the Laidlaw foundation (the arts community), Blyth Business Association (the local community) and Jim Cum- mings (a volunteer). Blyth Festival Theatre won the award for the medium-sized organi- zation, with the other awards going to Canadian Stage Company and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
