Alex McGilvery Dungannon United Church Candy canes, Santa Claus, fruitcakes, dreaming of a white Christmas. It is that time of year. It is Advent. Everything I do these days has something to do with Christmas. It is the season to be with family to love our neighbour, to give from our hearts, and to receive with joy. We tell of the shepherds, we sing of the magi, we think in wonder of the angels on the hillside. It is Christmas, it is a time of light and joy. Advent means coming. We are preparing for the coming of God into this world of ours. The birth of the Infant King, the birth of the one promised centuries before Isaiah. But after the celebration we skip over the next 30 years to the baptism of Jesus at the beginning of his ministry. What happened Two lifelong area residents were honoured on Sunday as they marked 60 years of marriage with an Open House at Grey Central Public School. The former Jean Lowe, who was born at Lot 12, Conc. 6 in Grey Twp. married John C. Conley of Brussels in Ethel United Church parsonage on Dec. 14, 1936. The bride was the daughter of William and Henrietta Lowe and the groom was the son of Curnail and Jane Conley. Uniting the couple in marriage that day was Rev. James Penrose. Attendents were Walter and Eva Penrose. The newlyweds honeymooned in Brussels, Cranbrook, Moncrieff and Ethel before moving to their home in Grey Twp. In addition to farming, Jack Conley worked as a truck driver at Silver Corners Dairy for eight years, drove school bus for 20 years and for six years owned a hardware store in Ethel. The Conleys retired in Cranbrook in 1985, then came to Brussels five years ago. Jean was a member of the WI at Ethel and Cranbrook for many years, while Jack was on the Grey Twp area s.;:lool board for 12 years and the Ontario Milk Producers Board for 12 years. Though mixed after the shepherds and the magic left for home? Herod was jealous of his power. The idea of a King being born was more than he could stand. So he had all the children in Bethlehem under two years killed. Murdered. The town was filled with grief and anger. For them the birth of God brought tragedy and darkness. Mary, Joseph and Jesus only escaped by fleeing to Egypt where they lived as refugees until Herod died. So what happened to the light and joy of the birth of Jesus. God came with Jesus, did God leave when Jesus' family fled to Egypt. Did God leave Bethlehem alone to suffer and mourn? No. God comes with such bright light that our darkness is illuminated and made- clear. While Christmas is a time of giving and love, it also shows us our selfishness and our farming and agriculture have always been their main interests they are also both members of the Canadian Foresters and of the Pres- byterian Church. The Conleys raised three chil- dren, Margaret (Mrs. Harvey) Clarke, Wilma (Mrs. Doug) Rath- well and Douglas. Guests attended the open house from London, Kitchener, Listowel, Brussels and Ethel community. need. So it is that along with Christmas carols we hear ads begging us not to drink•and drive. So as some eat turkey dinners and complain of how they ate too much, others look at their bare tables and try to ignore their hunger. So while some families gather and celebrate their love, others gather in grief, or shiver with fear. To borrow from Dickens "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times." It was then, it is now; and God is born into this time. Born into both our light and our darkness, our joy and our sorrow, our love and our grief and our fear, our sin and our hope. The name of this God is Emmanuel. God with us. With us wherever and whoever we are. I pray that your Christmas is filled with joy and peace. But if it is not, it is still Christmas, and God is with you.
