Bill and Marie Coutts were
greeters at Duffs United Church on
Dec. 17. Phyllis Mitchell, Margery
Huether and Glenda Carter used
their musical gifts and played many
favourite Christmas Carols before
the service began.
As Church was cancelled last
week, two advent candle liturgies
were read. JoAnn, Scott and
LeeAnn McDonald read last week's
liturgy and Scott lit the second
candle. Geoffrey and Patty Banks
and Paul Linton read the third
advent liturgy and Geoff lit the
pink candle.
Rev. Randy Banks announced
that worship service, 'Promise Kept
at Christmas', will be held
Christmas eve at 7:30 p.m. The
service also includes the sacrament
of Holy Baptism.
Rev. Banks called the young
worshippers forward and asked
them if they knew of a certain
candy that told the story about
Jesus. He then told the story about
a candy maker that wanted to find a
way to tell the story about Jesus
from his birth to his death. The
candy cane was made.
The white stripes on the candy
stand for the fact that Jesus was
sinless and pure. The three small
red stripes stand for the scourging
that Jesus endured before he died.
The large red stripe stands for
Jesus' blood, shed on the cross.
It is shaped like a shepherd's
staff, reminding us that Jesus is the
Good Shepherd. Turn it upside
down, and it is a letter 'J', the first
letter of Jesus' name.
With that Rev. Banks handed the
candy canes to the kids.
Gloria Wilbee, with guitar in
hand, then sang The Star of
Bethlehem. LeeAnn Mcdonald read
scripture and Rev. Banks delivered
his sermon combining two in one,
this and last week's sermon - "Hope
and Patience".
Hope the dictionary says is
desiring with expectation or
fulfillment. Notice how often the
word is used, Rev. Banks said.
"There is no hope. Here's hoping. I
hope he gets what is coming to
him. It's hopeless."
Hope is a prominent theme in the
old Testament. God is understood
to be the only reliable hope for the
people of Israel. The Greek word
for hope in the New Testament
appears rarely in the gospels and
not at all in Revelations. It appears
very often in Paul's letters.
At Advent - Christmas Christians
expect hope to magically abound
because they sing about it, read
about it and even, to some extent,
practice it.
Yet it isn't a very hopeful atmo-
sphere out there, Rev. Banks said.
People are hurting, full of fear, pain
and worry.
Whether we live confidently and
expectantly in this world is our
choice, he said. If we lose hope and
faith, we need to ask ourselves if
we have only made a fairweather
commitment to the calling of Christ.
People are probably the most
impatient beings on earth. They
want everything right now from
latest computer technology to the
quarter pounder combo to instant
pain reliever, Rev. Banks said.
They can understand being
activel hopeful but what about
actively patient? Isn't patience
passive?
Rev. Banks said that to him true
patience requires a significant
expenditure of energy.
"Abound in hope and in patience The best decorated home and
this Advent - Christmas and business in Brussels were
forever. Amen." announced this past weekend.
After the sermon Don McDonald, Little Darling's Hair Studio was

Due to the bad weather last
Thursday, the numbers were down
at the euchre game at Walton Hall.
The men's lone hand winner was
Mac Webster. Women's lone hand
winners was Lois Hart. The next
game will be played Dec. 28 at 8 p.m.
Monique Baan received word
this week that her grandfather, K.
VanderBroek had passed away in
Zundert, Holland.
Three of her grandparents from
Holland were able to attend her
wedding in April of 1993.

With so many notable displays
the judges admit they had a diffi-
cult task deciding who to acknowl-
edge this year and bestow
honourable mention on everyone
who helped to light up Christmas in
Brussels.
Residents can have the opportu-
nity to 'view the lights' on the local
channel of their cable network,
Channel 12 at 7 p.m., Dec. 20.
Santa will also be reading his let-
ters on TV that night.

Warren and Betty are first
cousins. They had a very nice visit
over dinner.
Dear Grandma:
Please, no socks, mittens
or underwear this year.
I'd like a gift certificate for
a week at Bernard's
Computer Camp for Kids,
either for March break or In
the summer, or a computer
game (SimLife, SimAnt,
SimCity, MathBlaster), yeah
they're educational, but fun
too.
Love, Billy...
P.S. You can get me all (or
some) of these by calling Pat
at Bernard Computer
Training Centre,
523-9441.
