Government cutbacks have
affected another sector of the com-
munity. Grants for the county fire
co-ordinator will be reduced to zero
in 1996.
In outlining the result's from a
recent Huron County Mutual Aid
meeting, Blyth and District Fire
Chief Paul Josling told Blyth coun-
cil Dec. 18, that county grants to
pay a portion of the co-ordinator's
wage have been dropping since
1993 and will reach zero next year.
In 1995, the county granted $930
to the Mutual Aid Association and
the fire departments contributed a
total of $5,000. Of this amount,
$1,700 went to the co-ordinator.
The remaining funds were used
for training, emergency foam and
other purchases, says Josling.
Now that "Old Man Winter" had
arrived outside, what better timing
for Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer to greet the residents in
the lounge at Blyth's Queen's Villa.
A delicious turkey meal, with all
the trimmings was prepared Dec.
12 and served to 17 people. This
was generously sponsored by the
Blyth Royal Canadian Legion,
Branch #420, who are interested in
being involved in a monthly meal
program. The new year will bring
about discussions to see if any
other community services/organiza-
tions may also be keen in
participating in such a worthwhile
project.

With no grants forthcoming, a
new way needs to be found to pay
the co-ordinator, he says.
At a meeting, the fire chiefs
decided that the.current system of
$200 per fire department per year
had to be changed.
Each of the 26 municipalities
contributed to the $200 depending
on the per cent of support, thereby
leaving some municipalities, such
as Morris Twp., paying only about
$45 while Stephen Twp. pays over
$350, says Josling.
Rejecting all alternatives from
the county, the fire chiefs proposed
a system which would charge each
municipality $350 annually, result-
ing in $9,100 per year, in total to
the Mutual Aid Association.
The monies would go to pay the
more concerning this should

co-ordinator $5,000 per year plus
S1,000 for his assistant.
Though supportive of the plan in
principle, neither Josling (speaking
on behalf of the fire area board) nor
the councillors could support the
amount of the fee for each munici-
pality or the percentage increase for
the co-ordinator.
"The fee should not increase 300
per cent," says Councillor Doug
Scrimgeour, "but we would enter-
tam a gradual increase."
Stating that the co-ordinator
works approximately 150 hours per
year, Councillor Scrimgeour said
he might consider (supporting) an
increase to $3,000.
Council agreed to support the fire
area board in their recommendation
to parties involved.
