Quartette appears as trio

Season of song
The Byth Festival Singers got in a few final rehearsals as
they prepared for the Christmas in Song concert on Dec.
10. Wade Whitttake MI lead the 40-voice choir through a
variety of choral selections including Brother Heinrichs
Christmas. The event will feature guest trombonist Nancy
Ross of Goderich and flutist Kelly Dearlove as well as a
puppet story.

entertaining action on stage Dec. 16
at the Blyth Memorial Community
Hall.
Plans for the annual Village
Christmas Pageant are well
underway as the program begins to
unfold and reveal the often
extraordinary talents of the area.
Many favourites return as well as
several new performers eager to
'strut their stuff' and entertain.
A sing-a-long will begin at
7 p.m. followed by the pageant at
7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the silver
collection gathered at the door will

There was disappointment at
Blyth Memorial Hall on Saturday
night when Quartette became a trio,
but the audience quickly accepted
the situation and enjoyed the
impromptu nature of the evening's
performance.
Colleen Peterson, still recovering
from chemotherapy treatments, was
unable to join the other members of
the group. As a result Caitlin Han-
ford, Cindy Church and Sylvia
Tyson, each solo performers in
their own right, split up the pro-
gram into solo acts before joining
together for a number of songs _at
the end of the evening.
It was an evening of increasing
musical complexity as Hanford led
off with her rather straight-forward
country songs. Church added more
variety with everything from coun-
try to folk to swing jazz.
After intermission Tyson took
over playing many of her famous
pieces like River Road and You
Were On My Mind (backed up by
Hanford and Church) along with
less familiar songs like Rejeane.
Her songs often have strong story
lines but none have a story quite
like The Night the Chinese Restau-
rant Burned Down.
The audience got a taste of the
sweet harmonies of Quartette when
the three joined in a gospel song to
round out the program.
The trio was back up by three tal-
ented sidemen led by Hanford's
husband, Chris Whitely on harmon-
ica, dobro, trumpet and guitar. Rich
Whitelaw provided guitar accom-
paniment while Randy Kempf
played bass. Tyson strapped on a
button accordion for several num-
bers with a French-Canadian lilt.
If one of the pleasures of being at
a live performance is to see famous
people in person, the performers
turned the tables on their audience
by talking frequently about the
pleasure they had coming to the
famous Blyth Festival. Hanford
repeated her praise several times
for the acoustics of Memorial Hall
and Tyson told people to appreciate
the fine theatre they had and work
to protect it.
