Leading off this week's new releases is Forget Paris ***1/2
(Columbia/cristar), an engaging romantic comedy about an NBA referee
(Billy Crystal) who falls in love with a lovely American woman (Debra
Winger) living in Paris. The script is smartly written and directed by Billy
Crystal while the acting by a cast that also features Joe Mantegna, Cathy
Moriarty, Richard Masur and Julie Kavner is first rate. Recommended.
(Rated PG)
As a big fan, of 'sci-fi thrillers I was expecting to really like Species
"1/2 (MGM/UA) another entry in the Alien school of other worldly
creatures. And for the most part I did enjoy this tale of a young woman
genetically engineered from both alien and human DNA who escapes
from the lab with a desire to mate. While the film offers little that is
original the pacing is brisk, but for the life of me I don't know why this
and so many other current Hollywood films must feature such
unnecessarily foul language. (Rated R)
On the other hand I found The Wizard of Speed and Time "* (Malofilm
- $19.95) to be simply delightful. This is the story of a special effects
filmmaker summoned by a couple of sleazy producers to create dazzling
special effects for their upcoming television special. There are several
catches in the deal though, which allow star, writer and producer Mike
Jittlov a chance to poke fun at Hollywood in general and show biz unions
in particular.
The whole tone of the film is on the light side alternating between
Keystone Cops comedy, biting satire and mind boggling effects. The
Wizard of Speed and Time is a marvelous fantasy focusing on the people
behind the scenes who seldom get the full credit they deserve. The stop
motion animation is truly inventive and spectacular (especially
considering the movie's low budget), incorporating Jittlov's previous
award winning short films The Interview and Animato. The first time I
remember seeing Mike Jittlov's work was in 1978 when he created three
wonderful MOUSE MANIA segments for Mickey Mouse's 50th
Anniversary television special. I had assumed at the time these were done
by the Disney studio, but after speaking with Jittlov recently he assured
me he and a friend did the whole thing in his garage.
The Wizard of Speed and Time is a wacky feel good film and I
recommend it to you without any reservations whatsoever. (Rated G)
Among the other new and unpreviewed releases available this week is
Body Language (HBO) a sexy thriller starring Tom Berenger as a criminal
defense attorney who becomes drawn into an affair with a stripper that
leads to murder. (Rated.R)
In Operation Intercept (Malofilm) the daughter of a murdered scientist
who believes the government is responsible for his death. threatens to
down passenger planes unless the killer is turned over to her. (Rated PG)
A young woman adopted at birth becomes obsessed with finding her
parents in Redwood Curtain (Republic). Based on a play by Pulitzer Prize
winning author Lanford Wilson, the film part of television's HALLMARK
HALL OF FAME stars Jeff Daniels, Lea Salonga and John Lithgow.
(Unrated)
One program I failed to mention in last week's column on those great
movie serials is an excellent documentary called Cliffhangers: Adventures
From The Thrill Factory. (Republic - $14.95) written and hosted by noted
film historian Leonard Maltin. This informative and highly entertaining
program is worth checking out.
