Letters Principal writes THE EDITOR, The closer the parent is to the education of the child, the greater the impact on child development and educational achievement. — Michael Fullan The strong supportive and interested parent response exhibited during last week's parent-teacher conferences is a fulfillment of the above statement. The staff of Brussels Public School thanks the many parents whose feedback, understanding, encouragement and suggestions will help us all effect a unified team effort to maximize learning among the children in our school community. We also applaud the special support to our school freely given by our many adult volunteers. Each of them enriches the school program. May there be blessings during this Christmas season and in the coming year for each family in our community. Sincerely, David Kemp. Tory stand shocks FWTAO Continued from page 4 violence in the media. FWTAO took a leading role in the recent CRTC hearings of media violence. Many studies, and teachers' own experiences have shown the clear link between on-screen images and increased fear, aggression and desensitilization in children. As educators we are aware that young people require every protection which society can manage against the toxic environment created by violence, sexist and racist images in television programmes, commer- cials and videos. Of further concern is the availability of such harmful images and socially unacceptable propaganda over the computer Internet. FWTAO rejects the argument that violence in the media cannot be controlled in Canada because so many programmes originate in the United States, believing that the U.S. can be influenced. On another front, women teachers have also been shocked by the Tory government's apparent insensitivity to violence against women. The government decision to end second-stage housing funding for battered wives trying to get a new start, came on the same day that Wife Assault Prevention Month started. The Federation and many other women's support groups are fearful that the situation will put battered women and abused children at greater physical risk as interval housing ends. FWTAO has provided funding to women's crisis, counselling and referral centres since a study on Women in Crisis was done in 1978. The Huron Women Teachers' Association has also supported our own Survival House through an annual auction and through donations of consumable supplies. FWTAO has consistently lobbied • the government concerning the importance of these initiatives. They believe that cutting funding to related services is a callous act which leaves women without a safe haven when they and their children are most in need. While organizations such as FWTAO continue in their anti- violence efforts, it is important to remember that violence against women is not just a women's issue. It is a societal issue that affects women, men, and children alike. We can all contribute to making our society a healthy one by supporting anti-violence work in our communities. On Dec. 6, wear a rose button or a white ribbon and show others you care. After Dec. 6, do something to show you mean it! Wilhelmina Laurie, President Huron Women Teachers' Association. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1995. PAGE 7. County gets more roads, less money Last week's provincial economic statement gave Huron County 76 km more highways to look after, then cut the money for roads. "You arc now the proud owners of three new highways," Denis Merrall, county engineer told the Nov. 30 meeting of council. The province is turning over Highways Huron County council agreed, at its Nov. 30 meeting, to sell the con- troversial Morris Tract to the Nature Conservancy of Canada for $285,000. The sale will end a controversy which exploded early this year after the county discussed selective log- ging of the county-owned forest east of Goderich. Several naturalist groups protested that the site was home to several rare plant varieties and logging, even on a limited scale, would endanger these. The county commissioned a val- uation of the land and timber values 87, 83 and 84 to the county. But in fact, Merrall said, there isn't much to be proud of about the new roads. It will be costly to bring them up to the level of the current county road system, he has said in the past when discussing the pbility of the couty assuming the roads. "The only good thing is they're not charging us for the land the of the Tract which put the land value at $160,000 and the timber value at $125,000 to $160,000. Council voted at its Nov. 2 meeting to offer the property for sale to the Nature Conservancy. The Agriculture and Public Works Committee met with John Grant of the Nature Conservancy at its Nov. 7 meeting. The groups met again on Nov. 27 when Grant pre- sented a counter offer. At the Nov. 30 meeting council accepted the counter offer following discussion during a two-hour and 40 minute closed session (most of which dealt with a report on pay equity). highways are on," he said face- tiously. But there is no extra money for highway maintenance. In fact Huron faces a 31 per cent cut in road grants in 1996 and a further 17 per cent in 1997. Preparations have already been made in the county budget expecta- tion of the 1996 cuts but the 1997 reductions may be more difficult, he said. My Christmas 'Wish "List...
