Blyth Festival Singers
Music to the ears and eyes
As the Bainton Gallery in Blyth opened the Exuberance Art Exhibition, artists and musicians
alike, filled the senses of the many who attended. The exhibit, a non-juried show for all
Huron County artists, runs from Nov. 26 to Dec.16. The creations on display include
everything from classic oils and watercolours to photography, pottery, sketchings, charcoal
drawings and fabric items. Lloyd Allen of Listowel, far right, and John Bettye of Blyth,
second from right, provided music for the opening night.
K-W Choir to do Handel's 'Messiah'
The Kitchener Waterloo
Philharmonic Choir's 74th season
gets off to a spectacular start in
December with two performances
of Messiah by George Frideric
Handel.
On Saturday, Dec. .9 the perfor-
mance starts at 7:30 p.m.; curtain
time for the Sunday, Dec. 10 :
matinee is 2 p.m. Both concerts
take place at Kitchener'g The
Centre In The Square.
Howard Dyck will conduct the
100-voice Philharmonic Choir and
members of the Kitchener Waterloo
Symphony. They will be joined by
four distinguished soloists:
soprano, Janet Obermeyer; mezzo-
soprano, Linda Maguire; tenor, Nils
Brown; and bass-baritone, Daniel
Lichti.
Soprano, Janet Obermeyer,
making her Philharmonic debut in
this appearance, has just returned
from Budapest where she was
performing vocal music by Franz
Liszt. This splendid young Toronto
singer received rave notices for her
1994 performance of Messiah with
the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.
Mezzo-soprano, Linda Maguire,
internationally-recognized as one
of Canada's leading singers, returns
to the Philharmonic after her
brilliant performance of the title
role in Rossini's Ermione at the
Glyndebourne Festival in England.
Tenor, Nils Brown of Montreal,
The 'Friends of Doon' invites
everyone to their second annual
fundraising event 'Starry Night' to
be held at Doon Heritage Cross-
roads on Friday, Dec. 22 from 6:30
- 9:30 p.m.
-Visitors will have the pleasure of
wandering through the beautiful
lantern lit village and buildings of
Doon. Musical entertainment,
samplings of traditional season
fare, chestnuts roasting on an open
fire and horse drawn wagon rides
make this Christmas event an extra
also making his Philharmonic
debut, is a rapidly-rising young
singer with a particular affinity for
Baroque repertoire.
Brass-baritone;' Daniel -Lichti, a
native of New Hamburg, and a
fatiourite, with local audiences is
-the-bass soloist on the all-Canadian
recOrdin of Handel's Messiah
which was issued last year as a
benefit for the .Mennonite ,Central
Committee and Habitat, for
Humanity. That recording,
conducted by Howard Dyck, has
just been released.
Handel's Messiah is, quite
simply, the most beloved oratorio
in the English-speaking world.
Composed in the astonishingly
short period 'of three weeks, the
work received its first performance
in Dublin in April of 1742. In the
intervening 250 years, there has
never been a time when Messiah
was not universally admired.
The Kitchener Waterloo
Philharmonic Choir enters its 74th
season following a European tour
in August.
In Mozart's church, the Salzburg
Cathedral, a "standing-room only"
crowd of 2,500 Salzburg Festival
patrons heard the choir perform
together with the acclaimed
Mozarteum Orchestra. This first-
ever international tour by the
Philharmonic Choir has already
special evening. Avid stargazers
will be able to view the winter stars
on a mini-sky planetarium from the
London Children's Museum.
A surprise guest will also be
putting in an appearance during the
evening — Donner, one of Santa's
very own reindeers will be at Doon
for this one night only, courtesy of
the African Lion Safari.
Tickets are $15 per adult and
$7.50 per child and can be pur-
chased in person or by phone at
748-1914. (Mastercard and Visa
accepted).
resulted in several invitations to
perform in various western and
eastern European countries.
Tickets for Messiah are available
at The Centre In The Square box
office.
Sleigh rides,
season treat
This year's early snow is quite a
contrast to 1994's lack of snow
until the New Year. But Heidi and
Anne aren't complaining. They are
the team of Belgian work horses
that pull the sleigh at Meeting Place
Farm. They are used to snow and
jingling bells as they pull the sleigh
over the fields and through the
woods on the McQuail farm near
Lucicnow.
And while last year some of the
rides had to be hay rides, it looks
good for sleigh rides this year.
Families, friends and staff parties
all take the opportunity of an old
fashioned Christmas tradition.
The woods may ring with the
joyous sounds of Christmas carols
or be hushed under the gently
falling snow. After the sleigh ride
visitors can warm up with hot cider
and Christmas cookies and kids can
spend time seeing the farm animals
in the barn.
This is the fifth year the
McQuails and their horses will be
offering sleigh rides. They will be
taking reservations now through the
Christmas holidays.
Join the Blyth Festival Singers
for Christmas In Song on Sunday,
Dec. 10 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
The annual Christmas concert
will be held in the Blyth Memorial
Hall and will feature a variety of
favourite choral pieces, including a
presentation of Brother Heinrich's
Christmas, by the contemporary
English composer, John Rutter.
Brother Heinrich's Christmas is
the story of donkey which makes
its way into the church choir. The
tale will be narrated by Duncan
McGregor of Blyth and Marion
Doucette will perform with
Sigismund, the donkey puppet.
Other featured guests will be
trombonist Nancy Ross of
Goderich, who gives Sigismund his
distinctive singing voice, and flutist
Kelly Dearlove.
The 40-voice Blyth Festival
Singers will be led by Wade
Whittaker and accompanied by
Deborah Wood.
After each of the two perform-
ances, the choir will follow its
annual Christmas tradition of
serving its famous hot spiced apple
cider and homebaked goodies in
the downstairs hall.
Concert tickets are $7 for adults
and $4 for children under 12. They
