Winter conditions, driving hazards Inconsistent weather patterns pose a hazard to Huron County drivers in winter. Sun, fog, snow, rain, slush, freezing rain, blowing snow, no matter what time of day, a driver should always take the elements into consideration, drive accordingly by watching their speed and increase the stopping distance to prevent highway collisions. "Speed Too Fast" is the major contributor of motor vehicle collisions in winter. A speed limit of 80 km/hour is for a roadway with normal weather and road conditions. Snow, ice and slush change the conditions, therefore your driving habits must change accordingly. Keeping headlights on during the day will not help you see, but it will help you to be seen especially in whiteouts and fog. Headlights must he on during rain and snow storms, blowing snow — including whiteouts, fog and one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise. When the weather conditions deteriorate and roads arc closed, this information will be passed on to CKNX 920AM/102FM and CFPL 980. For road report information call 1-800-265-5407. Help protect the environment Reduce, reuse and recycle "With government cutbacks the need and demand are greater than ever", says the chair of the Huron County Christmas Bureau. Murray Gaunt of Wingham says the Huron County Christmas Bureau has been providing support for needy children in the County for over 35 years. Last year the Bureau provided food, clothing and toys for 1,110 children in 495 families. Each child receives a new toy and new clothing. Food and food vouchers arc also issued to the family. The Children's Aid Society, along with the churches, operates five County Bureaus which collect and distribute donations to needy families in their areas. In this way the Children's Aid Society and the community are working together to build a brighter future for our children. Gaunt says that Huron County has a tradition of providing for needy families, who seek help at Christmas time. He is encouraging individuals, businesses, organiza- tions, schools and churches to be especially generous this year. It will all help to put a smile on a child's face this Christmas Season.
