Local youth
a nominee
for Jr. Citizen
A youth from Brussels has been
nominated for a very prestigious
honour, the Junior Citizen of
the Year Award.
Philip Graber, 14-year-old son of
Betty Graber of Brussels and Carl
Graber of Kitchener, was nominat-
ed by Sallianne Patch, Ark manag-
er, for his dedication to community
service and assisting others.
In her letter to the nominating
committee, Patch says Graber has
used his experience as a child of
divorced parents to help friends
going through similar situations
and offers his friendship to "lon-
ers", helping pull them into regular
activities..
An assistant teacher with ,the'
Sunday School prograr,n at his
Church, Graber also contributes
time to integrating challngdd
youth to programs at the Ark, help-
ing a wheelchair'-bound' adult vol-
unteer get from home to the school
and back and participating in the
many workshops, meetings, reno-
vations and fundraisers undertaken
by the Ark.
In support of Graber's nomina-
tion, Sheila Richards of Brussels
says "he is at home with people and
children of all ages. He looks after
babies, toddlers and public school
age children as well as regularly
volunteering at Huronlea, where he
reads, plays cards and visits with
seniors.
Graber's qualities "show a sense
of trust, caring and responsibility,"
say Richards.
Twelve Junior Citizens will be
selected on Dec. 8.
We're going
back in time
The Citizen is compil-
ing a commemorative his-
tory book for the Village
of Brussels in conjunction
with Homecoming '97.
Anyone with old photos
or information, please
drop in to either of our
offices, or call 887-9114
or 523-4792.
Everyone who is, or
was, part of the village is
important and we want to
hear your story.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
Diabetes Project held a pot luck
supper at the United Church on
Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
Despite the blustery weather, 24
people arrived to enjoy a selection
of delicious food. The meal opened
with a Pot Luck Prayer led by
Nelva Scott.
The education portion of the
evening was facilitated by
Marguerite Thomas, public health
nurse with the Huron County Health
Unit. A video- on Healthy Choices
was shown with the emphasis on
decreased fat, sugar, salt and
increased fibre which is healthy for
anyone's diet. Thomas emphasized
ways of lower fat cooking and
invited everyone to meet with Deb
Stewart for an armchair super-
market tour at the Brussels Health
Unit office on Dec. 4.
Other ways to boost nutrition are
to consume vitamin C. Fruits which
turn dark when exposed to air are
low in vitamin C. Apple juice may
have added vitamin C but a half
medium apple has a good fibre
content and provides more chewing
satisfaction than the 1/3 glass apple
juice which is the equivalent
diabetic serving.
It was also pointed out that it is
easy to eat a week's supply of salt
in one meal or snack.
Handouts were available to
reinforce the information from the
video.
Scott then gave a background of
the progress of the group over the
past year, outlining the many
activities and the doubled growth in
membership.
Bruce Hahn for the Medical/-
Dental Centre Board spoke on the
role of the board and its wish to
turn the management of the interest
on the estate funds directly over to
an executive chosen from the
members. He talked about the
history of the Elmer Somers
bequest and sugge'sted that an
executive group could budget the
yearly interest so the group will
remain ongoing for many years.
Following discussion, a meeting
date of Nov. 30 was set for 7:30 at
the Huron County Health Unit
Brussels Office. All members who
are interested in the group
restructuring are invited to attend.
He's number 1
Frank Thompson, Brussels Citizen of the Year, was honoured last Wednesday evening at
an appreciation night. Some 45 people were on hand to pay tribute to Frank and his service
to the community. With him as he receives his award from Sheila Richards, left, a member
of The North Huron Citizen board of directors, which sponsors the award, is his proud wife,
Lois.
