"In saving wilderness, every
victory could be temporary, every
defeat is permanent." Anyone
involved with Scouting knows the
full meaning of biologist Bristol
Foster's comment.
All sections have enjoyed a busy
agenda since registration in
September. Beavers were treated at
one meeting to a presentation by
Rev. Diamond, who talked about
his homeland, Australia. The boys
thoroughly enjoyed his
presentation.
Beavers have made nature
banners and celebrated the 21st
year of Beavers in Canada. In order
to make the best of winter
opportunities, they plan on going
skating soon.
Cubs have had a couple of guest
speakers so far this year. The
Huron County health nurse visited
one night to talk to the boys about
hygiene. They were fascinated by
her use of black light to
demonstrate how difficult it is to
get your hands really clean.
John Battye spoke to the boys
prior to Remembrance Day about
the significance of the day. Don
Goodall also showed the boys some
medals from the first World War
that were earned by his grandfather.
New Cubs were invested Nov.
14.

garlands have been hung with care

carefully unwrapped and placed on
the Christmas trees, ready for that
very special day.
At the turn of the century,
Christmas was indeed a special

will also be a Keeo Workshop that
weekend.
All Cubs will be able to
participate in a Winter Camp Dec.
15 and 16. Plans are being made to
hold the camp with 4th Goderich
boys in order to foster friendship
and learning among Cubs who are
involved in the same program.
Scouts have made hiking staffs,
and put them to good use on a
darkness hike. They participated in
B.P. Woodsman Camp Oct. 20-22,
and prior to Remembrance Day
invited Clare Vincent to speak to
them about his experience in the
war.
The Scouts are currently making
drums with rawhide, and will soon
be working on First Aid.
Rovers are busy planning'a future
fundraising campaign that will
enable them to participate in
various camping experiences and
workshops.
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts raised
$425.53 on Apple Day, Oct. 28
thanks to the generous support of
the residents of Auburn, Blyth and
Londesboro.
All sections were well represent-
ed at the Nov. 11 Remembrance
Day Service at the Memorial Hall
in Blyth.

meeting will be Jan. 8 at the Blyth
Public School. Parents of boys
involved in 1st Blyth Scouting are
always welcome to attend.
bundling into their horse-drawn
sleighs to visit friends and relatives
and the celebration of family
traditions passed down through the
years.
The threads of various ethnic
traditions are woven together at
Doon and are reflected in the food
and decorations within the various
houses. The commercialization of
Christmas by 1914 was already an
issue for some, but for many in the
small rural villages the availability
of store bought decorations,
presents and seasonal foods added
to the festival atmosphere.
Although the Schneider and other
Pennsylvania-German families did
not celebrate Christmas as the Birth
of Christ, December was a special
time of year with the preparation of
festive treats and much visiting
between families and neighbours.
At Joseph Schneider Haus special
theme weekends are planned for
December to celebrate some of
these traditions.
Sausage and Scrapple -
Dec. 2 and 3
After the annual Butchering Bee
in late November there is an
abundance of meat. On this
weekend, the leftover meat is made
into sausage and pawnhaas.
Tallow to Tapers -
Dec. 9 and 10
The fat from Butchering Bee is
also used to make moulded and
dipped candles, as well as bars of
hard soap.
Cookies and Pretzels-
Dec. 16 and 17
The Pennsylvania-Germans bring
out their cookie cutters at this time
of year and prepare baskets
overflowing with lebkuchen, sand
hearts, pfeffemusse.
St. Martin's Goose-
Dec. 23 and 24
A goose is cooked in the
woodstove and other uses of the
goose and goose wings are
demonstrated.
Throughout December visitors
will see this year's Christmas
exhibit in the gallery - Father
Christmas: Santas, Old and New.
This exhibit features the wondrous
`Dracula'
at
Grand
The world premiere run of
Michael Shamata and Paula Wing's
new adaptation of Bram Stocker's
Dracula has been extended for one
week, because of strong advance
ticket sales. Dracula, the classic
Gothic thriller, begins previews
Dec. 5, opens Dec. 8 and will play
through Dec. 30 on London's
Grand Theatre Mainstage.
Like a single drop of blood on a
calla lily, a mysterious presence
insinuates itself into the lives of a
beautiful young woman and her
idealistic fiance. With a billowing
of filmy white drapes, in the light
of a full ripe moon, shadows creep,
dogs howl, bats fly . . - and the
Grand Stage becomes filled with
the irresistible charm of evil.
Using the first stage adaptation
that is faithful to the original novel
and fabulous special effects The
Grand will present an elegant new
production of Dracula created
specifically for London. It will do
justice to the original novel and, at
the same time, enchant your eye
and give you the creeps . . . and a
few good frights. It's a gripping,
breathtaking battle between the
forces of evil and the forces of
good - the timeless journey
through darkness to light - and the
ultimate triumph of good over evil!
Stephen Russell is Dracula, with
Lewis Gordon as Dr. Abraham Van
Helsing, Robert Benson as
Renfield, Krista Jackson as Mina
Murray Harker, Victoria Adilman
as Lucy Westenra, Bruce Davies as
Jonathan Harker, Oliver Dennis as
Dr. John Seward and Christopher
Marren as Arthur Holmwood. It is
directed by Michael Shamata, with
set and costumes designed by John
Ferguson and lighting design by
Kevin Fraser.
