Quebec and Canada would be
ruined without them."
With the referendum tally com-
ing out a 50.6 per cent margin for
the Non side, Huron MP Paul
Steckle says the vote shows Que-
bec will remain in confederation as
we know it, but things will never be
the same.
"(The government) has to deal
with the issue quickly. "Areas aside
from those which deal with consti-
tutional change can be dealt with.
The government can look at special
privileges, but these will be privi-
leges which will be given equally
to every province, he says.
"People from all walks of life
converged •on Montreal (last Fri-
day), showing Canadians' concern
for Quebec. There was on outpour-
ing of Canadianism and kindness.
People felt a desperate need to keep
Canada together and the rally hope-
fully brought the country closer
together."
"We can't minimize the fact of
the slight majority, but the people
have shown a genuine feeling for
citizenship. The question was
ambiguous and did not get to the
heart of the reason for calling the
vote," says Steckle. "Many of those
who voted Yes, thought they would
still have a representative in Ottawa
after a Yes victory."
This is not the end, he says.
Canadians received the scare of
their lifetime which has created a
new sense of appreciation for
Canada and patriotism.
"There is a Canada this morning,
there is a parliament this morning
and I am proud to be a Canadian."

convincing to do in any concrete
proposals," says van Donkersgoed.
"The notion of agri-tourism has a
good deal of appeal, but farmers
need to be convinced that these
initiatives will add to rural Ontario
and not detract from the business of
producing food."
