The animals can be sold in the city for as much as $200," says Esther. After attending a flea market in Stouffville earlier in the year and minimal newsprint advertising, most customers are now found through word of mouth. The Reesor children have also taken a great interest in the family venture. Katrina has read exten- sively on the care and natural habits of the creature and quickly offers any needed information to a prospective owner. They really like sweet fruits and vegetables, says Katrina, and they don't like the company of other hedgehogs. They are solitary ani- mals. It is important to have a separate cage for each animal and to provide a covered area which allows them to hide, says Ernie, because they are a nocturnal animal and they like to burrow. They find safety in the darkness. Anyone interested in a hedgehog need not be concerned about shots for the animal and there is no vet care, says Esther. Hedgehogs are also good for anyone who has aller- gies. PAGE 6. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 19u4. By Janice Becker They're cute, they're small and they have a soft fuzzy belly, but look out for the quills. Hedgehogs as pets have found a new market, with mainly urbanites, in recent years and one Grey Twp. family have begun supplying that demand. Ernie and Esther Reesor, along with their children Katrina, Joel and Becky, began with six male and 10 female African Pygmy hedgehogs last December, after reading an article in Farm Woman magazine about the ease of raising the small rodent. Breeder stock was purchased from a Manitoba producer and within the year, Reesors had sold 35 hedgehogs born on their farm. "People are intensely interested in exotic animals," says Esther, "and hedgehogs are easy to care for, clean and are quiet. They can be litter trained and only require one feeding of top quality cat food each day." The animals are best housed at room temperature otherwise they will hibernate in the winter. Letter to the editor Continued from page 4 dollars every year. In some cases, these sharing activities have also involved municipalities, hospitals, universities and colleges. Simply put, many cost-cutting alternatives to amalgamating school boards are already in place across the province. In fact, more co-operation among boards is needed to reduce duplication in education, to save taxpayers money and to preserve student programs and services. As a taxpayer or parent, it's important that you let the Ontario School Board Reduction Task Force know your views about the impact of changing school board boundaries in your community by Oct. 31.
