The price of tree seedlings will
nearly double in 1997, so you'd
better order your trees now for
planting in 1996, said Steve
Harburn, the ABCA's forestry
technician. The Ministry of Natural
Resources will be trying to recover
the full costs of growing seedlings
and this will increase the price from
the current 10 cents per seedling to
19 cents.
"As well, the Ministry tree
nurseries in Kemptville and Orono
will be closed, resulting in fewer
seedlings being available for
landowners," said Harburn.
The ABCA has tree delivery and
planting services for landowners.
"There are still many seedlings and
larger stock trees available for the
spring. These trees are sold on a
first-come, first-served basis with a
Jan. 15 ordering deadline. Anyone
ordering after Jan. 15 must pay up-
front and we cannot guarantee their
order can be filled," Harburn said.
In the Planting Assistance
Program, 50 per cent grants are still
available for landowners who want
us to plant the trees for them,
explains Harburn. If landowners
would like to plant she trees
themselves, the ABCA has two
machine planters for rent.
Nannyberry and larch are two
new seedling species for 1996.
Nannyberry grows on wet sites, is a
good wildlife shrub with high
numbers of berries, and grows
about 15 feet tall. Larch is also
available. It's fast-growing, easy to
transplant and the timber is used
universally.
"We will also have Austrian pine
which grows well and quickly on
heavy clay soils, is drought
resistant and is salt tolerant.
Diplodia tip blight is still a
concern, but doesn't hurt the
Austrian pine until the tree is 35 to
40 years old," said Harburn.
For over 40 years, the ABCA and
MNR have worked with
landowners to reforest our
communities. Although millions of
trees have been planted thus far,
many river valleys and erosion-
prone soils still need to be
protected with tree cover. Next year
might be the best one for everyone
to add some trees to their land.
