The club started this season in early September, when new swimmers had a chance to come to the pool and give swim practice a try. On Saturday, Oct. 14 the Hurricanes had their first meet at the Vanastra Recreation Centre indoor pool, The Purple and White event began with warmups at 8:30 a.m. and races started at 9 a.m. The Hurricane Club swimmers were divided into two teams. The teams competed against each other and the stop watches for their fastest times. The Hurricane's new head coach, Kendra Papple set up an exciting but challenging schedule of events for the Purple and White meet. The list of events include: 100, 200 and 400 metre Individual Medley (this is a combination of Breaststroke, Back, Butterfly, and Freestyle). 800, 400, 200, 100 and 25 metre Freestyle (front-crawl) 200, 100, 50 and 25 metre Backcrawl 200, 50, 100 and 25 metre Breaststroke 200, 25, 100, and 50 metre Fly Coach Kendra has even included The Western Ontario Athletic Association (WOAA) Senior Hockey League is preparing for the 1995-96 season with 21 teams in a new three division setup. The Tiverton Thunder has ceased operation after four seasons, but the league welcomes the return of the Lions Head North Stars after a one year absence. Lions Head, along with Grand Valley, Dundalk, Mildmay, Teeswater and Lucknow will once again compete in the Senior "B" division. The Ripley Wolves, who dominated the Senior "B" loop over the last two seasons (37-3 won-loss Crusaders victorious Two goals by Ted Sills and excellent goaltending by Pat Cronin and Mike Smith led the Brussels Crusaders to a 4-3 Senior Hockey exhibition win over Milverton, this weekend. Trailing 2-1 in the second, Brussels scored three in a row, two by Sills, 49 seconds apart, and a shorthanded effort by Tom Mcdonald. The Drives closed to within one early in the third and although they dominated late in the period fell short by a goal. Greg Mulvey also scored for Brussels, giving the Crusaders a shortlived 1-0 first period lead while Rob Jarmuth, Eric Haefling and Brian Vaughn scored for Milverton. The Crusaders have tentatively scheduled an exhibition game Sunday at 2 against Lucknow. Milverton has completed their preseason schedule (two wins one loss) and travel to Shelburne Satur- day night for their league opener. a 1500 metre race for any swimmer willing to accept a challenge! Blyth Junior Broomball Registration and Practice Saturday, Oct. 21/95 6:15 to 7:15 Blyth Arena After a humiliating Friday night defeat at home against the Wing- ham Ironmen, the Brussels Bulls turned it around on Sunday to send the visiting Hanover Barons home with their first loss of the season. In an obvious display of undisci- plined hockey, the Bulls were steamrolled by the Ironmen, who shut them out 9-0. Goalie Jamie Taylor fended off 32 shots to the oppostion's 16. Coach Mike Henry said, Taylor had an outstanding pre-season, but didn't play to his potential. "He needs to get his con- fidence back, then we are expecting better things from him." Henry, who opened the season as the Bulls' assistant coach, was called in to run the bench at Sunday afternoon's home game, after Head Coach Jim Bridges announced he was stepping down. The game showed the team's potential as they skated away with a 6-3 victory. Ryan Wright scored two of the goals, one on a power play and the other short-handed to help his team to the win. Other goals were by Sheldon Mustard, Tim Beyer, Mur- ray Kaye and Aaron Barrie, his first as a rookie defenseman. Goalie Ryan Fisk played an out- standing game, according to Henry. Though the team lacked motiva- tion on Friday night, things defi- nitely turned around on Sunday, Henry said. "The fire was lit and they came to play." "We didn't get off to a very good start. Fingers can be pointed, but we need to take the blame as a team. We need to look positively forward and negatively behind us." Coming off the win against Hanover on Sunday should prove exciting for this weekend's action as the Barons return on Saturday night to meet the Bulls at home.
