East Wawanosh PS news Students talk about their `amazing senses' By Amy Barnes, Rebecca Bruton, Samantha Gibson, Paul Walker and Michael Procter THE GRADE 3/4 NEWS The Grade 3/4 students have been very busy so far this year. They have ben talking about and working with "Our Amazing Senses" in Environmental Studies. They have had three birthdays so far — Tim Van Camp on Sept. 17, Felisha Price on Sept. 25 and Kevin Freiburger on Oct. 10. Many students tried out for cross- country. They also started a Junior Jug Band with their Grade 2 Buddies. Mrs. Hessels is reading them the book The Indian in the Cupboard and students arc really enjoying it. They have a "Computer Whiz" each day who is allowed to use the classroom computer. Last but not least they made Bump Faces and sandpaper/ crayon pictures. They turned out very well! GRADE 4/5 NEWS The Grade 4/5 had fun organizing their first treat sale on Friday. Abe Wiebe moved to Moncton and the Grade 4/5 class will miss him dearly. Many students have been trying out for cross country. They practise every day. This class visited Mr. and Mrs. Pengelly, who live next door to the school. They learned about their cotton plant and how cotton grows. The Grade 4/5 birthdays up to date are — Jenni Hopf, Abe Weibe, Jacquie Macintosh for September, and Paul Garniss, Krista Hewitt, Emily Elston, Matthew and Heather Rochetta for the summer. The Grade 4/5s have heard two All About Me's by Nathan Spivey and Bonnie Forsythe. The class is enjoying a book by a favourite author of school children from England named Ronald Dahl...It is entitled Danny Champion of the World. GRADE 6 NEWS In Grade 6 they have started an Earth Alive program in which they will be studying trees. Each student will be adopting a tree for this year. They will also be studying veining patterns and how to tell the age of a tree. As a follow up on their Earth Alive program they will be taking a trip to the East Wawanosh Conservation Centre on Oct. 17. On the artistic side of Earth Alive, Grade 6 made prints out of leaves. In math, Grade 6 is reviewing multiplication and addition facts. For new skills they are learning place value, decimals and how to estimate. To date the Class Spotlight has focused on Craig Marks and Mrs. Gross. To raise funds for their class trips, Grade 6 will be selling doughnuts supplied by B.J.'s Cafe. Please check your school calendar for days on which doughnuts will be sold. STUDENT COUNCIL On Friday, Sept. 22 our student council executive was elected. After listening to many entertaining speeches in the gymnasium, students were asked to return to their classrooms to fill out the final ballot. From the number of votes Julie Woodley was elected for president, Lauren Walker for secretary and Kevin Hopf for treasurer. Congratulations to all the other candidates who participated in the election. We are looking forward to many interesting events which council will be planning this year.
