M. Lichty brings message
Mervin Lichty gave the message
at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
on Sunday, Oct. 15.
The topic this week was "Facing
Our Fear of Living Insignificant
Lives" following the main theme of
"Facing Down Our Fears'". Com-
paring ourselves to others can be
unwise and damaging, he said. God
sees each sparrow fall and though
people are each of much more
significance than any bird they
should not compare themselves
with others. Lichty said, signifi-
cance isn't found in trumpet blasts
but in the faithfulness of everyday
living. Accomplishments outside
God's command will ring hollow.
All else is mere vanity.
God formed us, and He knew all
about us even before we were born.
For God to know us that well, we
must be of significance, he said.
Erla Koch led the worship
service and Lloyd Koch led the
congregational singing. Kathy
Procter was pianist. Darlene
Hemingway played the offertory.
Three members of the youth group
presented a drama of a high school
reunion in which various alumni
were comparing themselves to
others there. The skit performed by
Michelle Lichty, Darlene Heming-
way and John-Eric Pardys, was a
lead-up to Mr. Lichty's message.
Eleven members of the youth
group and three adult sponsors
attended sessions entitled "Leader-
ship Adventure" on Oct. 13 and 14
(Friday evening and Saturday), at
Breslau. Teaching sessions dealt
.with "Daring to Believe in God",
"Daring to believe in the Church",
"Daring to Believe in Yourself."
Next Sunday Linda Garland will
bring the message on "Facing Our
Fear of Rejection" continuing the
overall theme of "Facing down Our
Fears."
Thought for the Week:
When you start thinking defeat,
the devil may already have the
victory.
Rod Steinman brought the
message at Brussels Mennonite
Fellowship on Sunday, Oct. 8. The
main theme was "Facing Down Our
Fears" and Mr. Steinman spoke
more specifically on "Facing Down
Our Fears of a Society that is
Breaking Down," and entitled his
message "Take Heart — God IS in
Control".
He pointed out that fear shapes
lives more than we like to admit,
but the antidote for fear is love. We
need to establish a solid home front
and make the ultimate life choice
for Christ. Only God can dispel our
fears completely.
Bev Brown was the worship
leader. Manivan and Phailop
Larprom led the congregational
singing. Phailop also provided
accompaniment for a trio, when
Sue Seigers, Destiny and Michelle
Lichty ministered through song.
Tim Procter played the piano for
the offertory.
Following the Sunday School
Hour, a fellowship meal was held
in the gymnasium. After the meal a
special service was held in the
chapel with Thanksgiving and
Servanthood being emphasized.
The.elders were in charge of this
service and Anne Hemingway and
Kathy Procter led the
congregational singing.
Donations of non-perishable food
items were collected for the Teen
Challenge Food Drive. Letters were
also written to accompany birthday
greetings to several people in the
mission field. Letters and birthday
greetings are sent on a monthly
basis to missionaries.
Thy church family were busy this
week with the Self Help Craft Sale
which was held Thursday, Friday
and Saturday.
Firefighter
visits BPS
As part of Fire Prevention Week,
two classes at Brussels Public
School were visited by Assistant
Chief Don Crawford last week .
Videos were shown to Grades 3/4
and 7/8, which Crawford said, basi-
cally inform the students of the
dangers of fire. The younger stu-
dents saw "Sparky the Fire Dog,
which Crawford describes as "the
ABCs of fire safety" —what to do
when a fire starts, how to escapes
and instructions such as "stop,
drop, roll."
The Grade 7/8 video was on fire
power. "It explained how it takes
60 seconds from the start of a fire
to have enough smoke to set off a
smoke detector and that in just six
minutes a home can be fully
engulfed," Crawford says.
Believing that the best way to
prevention is through education,
Crawford says he hopes the school
visits will continue on an annual
basis.
Helpful crafts
The first night of the Brussels Mennonite SelfHelp Craft
Sale brought in $2,100 from people who came to
purchase unique crafts such as the ones Lynne
Armstrong, left and Bev Brown are holding. Net sales
from the three day show, were $4,427.18. The money
raised from the sale helps Third World families by retailing
their items at a fair price. Brown says every $1,400 raised
supports a family for one year.
