KEN COWAN
A former Blyth-area resident
passed away at Huronia District
Hospital, Midland, on Tuesday,
Sept. 26, 1995.
Ken Cowan was born 84 years
ago in Blyth. In 1938, he started
working as a principal, teacher and
lay minister on Christian Island,
where he stayed for five years.
After moving to Midland, where he
was principal of Parkview School
until his retirement, he worked to
bring natives into the public educa-
tion system, overseeing students'
transportation needs and billeting
them in homes on the mainland.
A familiar figure around town,
Mr. Cowan was well-known for his
community service. He devoted
much of his life to the native com-
munity of Christian Island. In 1994
he was invited back to judge a chil-
dren's poster contest in th United
Church. It was the last time he vis-
ited the island.
Mr. Cowan was active in St.
Paul's' United Church, in the field
of education and was a founding
member of the Midland Lawn
Bowls Club.
Faith Marsden of Christian Island
remembers him for his years on the
island, not only as a minister and
teacher, but as a "very obliging"
acting Indian Agent.
Mr. Cowan was the beloved hus-
band of the late Bessie M. Hillen.
He was the dear father of Carol and
her husband Norman Jamieson of
Norcross, Georgia, Liz and her hus-
band Ron Rogers of Thornhill. He
was the loving grandfather of Dar-
ryl, Ryan, Carrie and Gregory and
brother of Benson Cowan of Strat-
ford, George Cowan of Chatham,
William Cowan of Goderich, Hazel
Dalgliesh of Burford and the late
Grace Evans.
The family received friends at the
Lynn-Carson Funeral Home, Mid-
land. Funeral services were held
Saturday, Sept. 30 at St. Paul's
United Church at 2 p.m. At the ser-
vice there was an Ojibway native-
language tribute to Mr. Cowan.
Interment was at Lakeview
Cemetery, Midland. Memorial
Donations to St. Paul's United
Church or the Alzheimer's Society
would be appreciated.

Welcome back
Ruby Philp, whose husband Del was pharmacist in Blyth
for 40 years, in the building where Luann Taylor's Luann's
Country Flowers is now located, came to visit and see the
renovations last week. Using the picture of Philps drug
store, Luanne has restored the building to some of its
former glory, including the wood floors and uncovering the
tin roof.
