Munsch
The Blyth Festival invites
audiences of all ages to Let's Do
Munsch on Saturday, Oct. 28 at
1:30 p.m. at the Blyth Memorial
Community Hall. This production
builds upon the momentum of last
year's Peter. and the Wolf which
performed to over 4,000 students,
teachers and parents.
Specifically created for children
Grades Kindergarten - 6, Lee's Do
Munsch is a musical adaptation of
six of Robert Munsch's best loved
stories. This play brings together a
lovely variety of Robert's work
from the delightful lunacy of
Angela's Airplane and Mud Puddle
to the lyrical Millicent and the
Wind.
A wonderful kaleidoscope of
music, puppets, and laughter Let's
Do Munsch is the collective
creation of a group of dedicated
theatre professionals, community
adults, and young people. Let's Do
Munsch is theatrically adapted by
Barbara Poggemiller and directed
by Duncan McGregor, with music
by Arlene Darnbrough.
As an initiative of the Blyth
Festival board of directors, the
Festival appreciates the generous
support of Bluewater Secondary
School and the Imperial Oil
Charitable Foundation's Theatre
For Kids Project.

Review
By Janice Becker
What is the definition of a true
Canadian star? Everyone knows
you're famous, but they don't know
your name.
Though he says this phenomena
has been experienced several times
through his career, Don Harron
(aka Charlie Farquharson and
Valerie Rosedale), along with his
wife Catherine McKinnon, is very
well-known to the crowds which
filled Blyth Memorial Hall on Oct.
1, to attend their concert.
Held as a fundraiser for the Blyth
Festival Theatre, the Harron/McK-
innon concert quickly sold out for
the evening performance and an
afternoon show was added to the
schedule.
The duo, veterans of many years
on both the Canadian and Ameri-
can stage, presented a six-part vari-
ety show, changing costumes and
characters as the other performed.
Harron quickly won the hearts of
his audience, extolling the virtues
of the Blyth Festival and the
uniqueness of the company.
As if speaking to a group of long-
time friends, Harron recounted his
comic adventures dressed as a
woman with the obvious difficul-
ties of choosing the politically cor-
rect public restroom or having hotel
patrons stare at him/her because the
nyloned legs were clearly
unshaven.
"I don't tell jokes. I just tell what
has actually happened to me," he
says. But then, not every 70-year-
old dresses as a woman and walks
through a major Toronto hotel.
- While in character as Farquhar-
son and Rosedale, Harron's hilari-
ous form of comedy, the simply
stated humour in every day situa-
tions or a classic slip of the tongue
which turns a run-of-the-mill state-
ment into side-splitting giggles,
kept the audience laughing and
nudging their neighbours through
out the show.
McKinnon, with her beautiful,
strong voice, brought class and
style to the comedy petformances,
with renditions of traditional, Mar-
itime tunes, Scottish ballads, coun-
try classics, sambas and pop songs.
Her music could stir the listener
and with a little encouragement,
she enticed the audience to sing
along (and on their own) to a rous-
ing performance of Will the Circle
be Unbroken.
McKinnon, in costume, added
her own touch of humour, reading a
poem written by Mrs. Farquharson.
The twists of a phrase were
priceless.
The two and a half hour show
ended with a richly-deserved stand-
ing ovation.
As for the fundraising efforts of
the concert and the dinner, which
was held between the afternoon and
evening performances, all three
events were sold out and raised a
otal of approximately $12,000 for
the Festival.
Ovation well-deserved
`Forever Plaid' sells out
