Old drain causes concern for council Picking stones is child's play Senior students from Brussels Public School spent a very warm afternoon on Sept. 29, helping to prepare the field for the new ball diamond being created behind the BMG arena. After the stone picking was completed on Saturday morning, the lot was seeded with grass. However, he warned, the county currently doesn't have the money and there seems little chance the province will help out in these times of cutbacks. Reeve Gordon Workman con- firmed that the village doesn't have the kind of money required for such a project either. Merrall said the drain is old enough that it may predate the county's assuming the street. As more driveways and parking lots were paved, the amount of water the sewer had to deal with would increase. "We're dealing with a very large load that was built an ounce at a time," he said. Given that there was no money to put in a larger storm sewer, there were smaller alternatives that all parties could undertake, Merrall suggested. The property owner could put a back-flow valve on the cellar drain outside the foundation to slow water coming up the drain into the basement in heavy flood- ing. Merrall said the county would be willing to look at flow restricters to reduce water pressure in the drains. The village might also want to look at putting a sewer camera through the drain to see if there were any blockages anywhere. Councillors agreed that the coun- ty should look into the flow restricters and the village would give permission to Oldfields to do work under the sidewalk to install a back-flow valve. OMAFRA sponsors events Continued from page 19 including, but going far beyond, the criminal reference check. The end product will be a simple, yet comprehensive system which you can use with confidence. Both of these events will be held at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, 100 Don Street in Clinton. That's also where you can register for either of these Volunteer Huron workshops. • For a painful arch, roll your foot over a can of frozen juice con- centrate. Both the cold and the massage will help relieve the pain. If it's too cold, wrap the can in a washcloth. You can also use a can of tennis balls or any other can, but you won't get the icing effect.
