Humidifiers improve indoor air With today's increasing concern for healthful indoor air, more homeowners are turning to whole house humidifiers. Millions already use whole house humidifiers, which are installed directly on the home's heating system and distribute humidified air to the entire house. Research Products Corporation reported that, in a recent survey, more than a quarter of new home buyers said they want a whole-house humidifier. Vern Hellenbrand, president of Research Products Corp., attributes the interest to growing consumer awareness of indoor air quality. "People today are spending more money and time making sure their indoor environment is healthful and comfortable," Hellenbrand says. "They recognize that adequate indoor humidity increases winter- time comfort and helps protect the home and furnishings from the damage of dryness. People want the easiest, safest possible way to achieve those benefits, and that is with a whole-house humidifier." Whole-house humidifiers are popular primarily because they increase indoor comfort, but many doctors also recommend increased wintertime humidity to relieve cold symptoms such as a dry nose and scratchy throat. There is even evidence that adequate humidity can help the body get rid of airborne viruses, Hellenbrand says. Whole house humidifiers provide maximum convenience, Hellen- brand says, because they maintain constant humidity automatically and have an automatic water supply and a safe, flow-through drain so there is no reservoir to fill or spill. Whole house humidifiers are available for all types of central heating systems, including forced air, steam, hot water or electric. Hellenbrand offered the following tips for choosing a safe, effective whole house humidifier: • Look for a safe, flow-through drain design that doesn't allow water to stand in the unit. Standing water could breed mold, bacteria and other harmful irritants. • Get a humidifier that provides moisture in harmless, vapor form, not mist or droplets. The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has criticized some ultrasonic humidifiers and other mist-type models because they produce a fine, white, mineral dust that can be hazardous when it is inhaled. A study released in 1992 by Penn State University found that evaporative-type humidifiers do not pose any health hazard. • Buy a humidifier which includes an accurate, automatic humidistat that will provide a uniform relative humidity level of 35 per cent throughout your house. Fully automatic, "set-and-for-get" humidistats are now available for some humidifiers. • Get a humidifier that requires minimum maintenance. The best ones only need to have a simple evaporative element replaced once a year, when you inspect your furnace.
