The Brussels Tigers won the
1995 Huron County Fastball
League Championship Sunday
afternoon with a 6-0 victory over
the Lieury Red Sox. The win gave
the Tigers the best of three series
two games to one.
Brussels opened the scoring in
the fourth with three runs. Todd
Uhrig led off with a triple, followed
by a Murray Pipe single, and a Ken
Higgins homerun. The Tigers added
three more in the fifth on a Tim
Fritz single, a Doug Shaw swinging
bunt double, and a Uhrig homerun.
Derwyn Hodgins went the
distance for Lieury while Uhrig
pitched an eight strikeout, six hit
shutout for the Tigers.
Uhrig and Higgins each batted
two for three while Fritz and Shaw
were one for two.
The turning point came in the
fourth, when tied at zero, a Ron
Strome to Fritz to Pipe relay nailed
a runner at home plate on a
homerun attempt.
The Tigers opened the series with
a 1-0. forfeit win last Sunday after
Lieury arrived minus enough
players to field a team. Lieury tied
the series with a 1-0 home field win
Friday night. Derwyn Hodgins
On Aug. 19, the Hullett Squirt
Girls participated in their year-end
tournament in Goderich. With a
total of nine teams participating,
Hullett took the B division
championship for the second year
pitched a three hitter while striking
out 13 of the first 16 Tigers faced.
Uhrig struck out 10 while also
giving up three hits, one of which
was a fourth inning homerun.
The Tigers best chance came in
the sixth when they had runners on
first and second with nobody out.
However, solid Red Sox defence
turned a double play to end the
rally.
The Tigers enjoyed an excellent
season of ball winning both the
Huron County regular season and
playoff titles as well as reaching the
. finals of the Seafonh, Brussels and
Goderich tournaments. They scored
six runs in the deciding game
against a Lieury team that had
allowed only three runs against in
their previous six games, while
Tiger defence held the opposition
to one run in the championship
series.
The Huron County Fastball
season officially ends on Oct. 14 in
Seaforth when the Tigers will be
presented with the Championship
Trophy at the league banquet. The
Tigers thank all their fans who
supported them throughout the
1995 season and will see you again

games dulling the season and came
up with an excellent record of 14
wins and two loses.

In the opening game of the sea-
son the Brussels Bulls showed they
mean business this year skating to a
4-4 tie with the hosting Wingham
Ironmen, Friday night.
Assistant Coach Mike Henry
says the game was an improvement
over last year's opener, where the
Ironmen strong-armed the Bulls to
a 7-6 loss. Noting that the team was
shorthanded with some suspensions
from exhibition play, Henry said
Friday's game was not really indici-
live of what the season promises.
"It's only going to get better. We
seem to be off to a quicker start
ability-wise," Henry said.
Coach Jim Bridges said the team
suffered from too many penalites.
"Discipline is something to work

on. Also, I'm not going to say the
officiating, was poor, but it did
seem to be one-sided."
Bridges credits goalie Ryan Fisk
with playing a good game. "He
kept us in there when things were
getting tough, especially during the
second period."
Bridges sees the strength of this
year's Bulls in its defense. "I feel
that the defense of this team is
going to come around and win
hockey games for us."
Another promising highlight of
Friday's game was the tie-making,
and first goal of 14-year-old rookie
Dan Williams.
Other goals were scored by Shel-
don Mustard, two and Ryan
Wright.
The Bulls are travelling- to Kin-
cardine this Friday night, then will
play their home opener on Sunday
at 2 p.m. against the championship
Mt. Forest Patriots.
On Saturday afternoon, the Bulls
will be cooking at the IGA parking
lot from 11 a.m. through the after-
noon to raise funds and meet their
fans.
