The Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony will open its 1995/96
Masterpiece Series with
Beethoven's majestic Symphony
No. 9, nicknamed the Choral.
Performed in Kitchener's The
Centre In The Square, the concerts
will be presented at 8 p.m. on Oct.
13 and 14. The weekend sponsor is
Spae-Naur Inc.
Many critics believe that the
works of Beethoven's later years
sought a more intimate level of
communication than earlier pieces.
Bridging the gap between the
classicism of Mozart and the full
romanticism of Chopin and
Berlioz, Beethoven seemed
concerned to work through some of
the stylistic challenges presented by
younger composers.
Between 1822 and 1824,
Beethoven wrote two of his
greatest compositions: the Mass in
D (Missa solemnis) and, of course,
the 9th Symphony.
Using Schiller's An die Freude
(Ode to Joy) as its setting, the final
movement of the 9th brings
together the symphonic tradition of
the past with an intense and
exuberant choral finale.
Beethoven's interest in the work
goes back to his very early years in
Bonn in the late 1790s.
A colleague from the time,
For young people across Canada
looking for the opportunity to
become involved in the workings
of Parliament, the federal govern-
ment provides that chance through
a guide and parliamentary page
program.
"Approximately 40 student are
selected from high schools and
CEGEPS (Quebec prep schools)
across Canada to come and work as
pages in the House of Commons,"
says Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steck-
le. "Those hired work part-time
during their first year of study at
one of the universities in the
National Capital Region."
The parliamentary guides, young
Canadians from various academic
and linguistic backgrounds, answer
the questions, explain the history
and activities of Canada's Parlia-
ment as well as the significance of
by purchasing your 1996 voucher

ful birthday, anniversary and
writing to Schiller's wife, said that,
"He proposes to compose Schiller's
Freude, strophe by strophe. I
expect something perfect, since he
is wholly devoted to the great and
sublime."
Although he completed the
symphony in February of 1824, the
premiere was not given until May
of that year.
Beethoven was apparently
concerned that his music had fallen
out of favour with the people of
Vienna, and he feared presenting a
concert there.
However, when news of this fear
began to circulate among his
friends in the city, a document was
prepared proclaiming their
confidence in him and their wish to
stage the premiere. As a result,
Beethoven agreed to conduct both
the 9th Symphony and portions of
the Missa solemnis at the
Kamtnertor-Theater on May 7.
There are two versions of the
details of that first performance,
although the basic story remains
consistent.
Some claim it was after the
Scherzo movement, while others
suggest it was at the end of the
concert, but it seems clear that the
deaf Beethoven was unaware of the
tumultuous reception which the
work was receiving until the
the art and architecture of the build-
ings, to the thousands of visitors
from Canada and around the world
which visit the region each year,
says Steckle.
In an effort to encourage students
from outside the Ottawa area to
apply for these employment oppor-
tunities, the House of Commons
will send selection committees to
the regions to interview candidates
as well as pay successful candi-
dates' transportation costs to and
from Ottawa at the beginning and
end of the term of employment.
Anyone interested in such an
opportunity can find the application
kits at all Canadian high schools
and employment centres on campus
or by contacting the MP's office.
Applications must be postmarked
by Nov. 6 for the guide program
and Dec. 1 for the page program.

and the Renaissance Singers.
The soloists are Christine
Walters, soprano; Kathleen Flynn,

Gary Relyea, brass-baritone.

versary season with a performance
