With cold weather quickly
approaching, the Park Recreational
Development Committee (PRDC)
in Brussels is pulling together a
team of volunteers to help pick
stones, work the land for seeding
and haul stone dust at the new ball
park by BMG arena.
During the Sept. 13 meeting of
the committee, it was decided that
two work days should be set for
Sept. 29 and 30, to get the work
well underway.
Neil McGavin will be donating
the seed drill for the project and
Merle Hoegy has offered a dona-
tion of fertilizer for the grass seed
which was purchased from him at a
cost of $2,402. 93.
By Bonnie Gropp
Sprucing up the downtown core
was the main focus of a lunch
meeting attended by local business-
people on Sept. 21 in Brussels.
Dr. Gary Davidson, of the Huron
County Planning and a professor at
the University of Waterloo met
with several merchants to discuss
the possibility of involving univer-
sity students in projects for eco-
nomic development.
Referring to economic develop-
ment studies done in the 80s,
Davidson said that today, groups
are looking at what types of pro-
jects can be down within limited
resources. Using students, who in
turn benefit from the experience, is
a way of saving money.
Noting the number of abandoned
buildings in a state of disrepair in
the downtown core, Clerk-Treasur-
er Donna White said, "Sometimes
all (a community) needs is a fresh
look at things."
One of the main ideas presented
for that fresh look, was having
building owners co-ordinate
colours on the facades. Davidson
said that while this can be done by
regulation it seldom works. "It's
best to try and do something in har-
mony."
He added that getting local store
owners to co-operate is seldom a
problem as "a lot of them realize
the better the business looks the
better business is."
Businesspeople have learned that
they are not competing with the
person across the street but rather
Stone dust has been purchased
from Maitland Concrete, at a cost
of $2.75 per tonne or $1,500 and
will be hauled by John McKercher.
Local stores will be canvassed
for donations of pop and snacks for
the volunteers.
A letter will also be drafted to
Pioneer Seeds, by PRDC Lions
Club Representative John Harrison,
to request funding for one half the
cost of fencing for the ball park.
The committee will match the
donation.
Anyone wishing to assist in the
creation of the new ball park should
contact a committee member or
watch for a sign which is to be
posted in town.
with outside communities."
The target, White said, is to get
the village "spruced up" before the
homecoming in 1997.
Another project considered was a
traffic count to determine what the
heaviest traffic times are and the
destinations. "It might just be local
traffic moving around a lot, but it is
information that could prove
advantageous to some businesses.
The information won't mean the
In other matters discussed by the
committee, it was decided that the
election for executives in 1996
would be set at the October meet-
ing.
The co-ed ball tournament, which
was held on June 24 to 26, showed
a net profit of $2, 583.70.
A fundraising live, silent auction
is being planned for Nov. 24 at the
Brussels Legion, with items on dis-
play the previous day.
Members of PRDC are John Har-
rison, Lions; Mike Thomas, Opti-
mists; Gary Pipe, Recreation
Board; Jacquie Cowing, Ladies slo-
pitch; Jayne Ross, Ladies slo-pitch,
Greg Wilson, soccer and Sandra
Josling, Brussels Legion.
same to everybody."
He suggested getting secondary
or elementary Geography students
involved in this project.
The idea of having murals paint-
ed on the exterior walls of some
prominent buildings downtown was
discussed and it was felt that this
could be done by Art students if
they were interested and if a theme
or design was devised for consis-
tency.
