These and other fascinating
encounters with area artists and
artisans are yours to enjoy on the
last weekend in September. The
Huron Society of Artists welcomes
one and all to their 3rd Annual
Studio Tour, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
Get a glimpse of the rich diversity
At the recent provincial board of
directors meeting of the Federated
Women's Institutes of Ontario
(FWIO), two projects to help
Ugandan victims of AIDS were
announced.
Peggy Knapp, Canada Area
President of the Associated
Countrywomen of the World
(ACWW), said "In Uganda, many
families have been devastated by
the AIDS virus, which has taken
the lives of young women and left
tiny babies and young children
vulnerable to the disease."
Tweyambe, a Ugandan village
women's group, has attacked the
resulting problem of poor nutrition
in the area studio - workshops.
Chat with the artists, get a start on
Christmas shopping, or just share a
glass of cider and a snack in a
studio setting with your traveling
companions.
Encounter porcelain, stoneware,
and exciting raku pottery in Rob
Tetu's "Beechwood" Studio.
Visit the London, Eng. trained
painters Anne Eekhoff-Hamilton
and Tristan Eekhoff in their century
old farm house near Grand Bend.
Picturesque Bayfield offers the
studio-retail outlets of three
artisans. Sylva Leser's ultra modern
pottery-studio on Main Street
by setting up a village nursery for
AIDS orphans. This group requires
an increased, dependable supply of
fresh milk for the children and has
requested funding to purchase a
herd of 102 milking goats to
achieve their goal.
Another group, the United
Women of Uganda, is addressing
the welfare of older children who
are responsible for the care of their
younger siblings. These women
have begun a project of raising
pigs. This project aims to provide a
protein staple for the community
diet, to allow the children to be

committed to join the rest of the
Canadian societies in raising the
$8,000 required to support these

two examples of women acting
together to improve the quality of
life for all people.

A reunion of old friends
It was a day to be reunited with old friends as graduates of local one-room school houses
gathered for the 75th annivesary of the Belgrave School Fair. As well as representing S.S.
No. 9, participants were invited to enjoy the late afternoon barbecue and evening dance as
part of the day-long, celebration on Sept 15.
