Although the response to The Little Princess **** (Warner - $26.98 or
less) was disappointing in theatres this past spring, be sure not to miss it
on home video. The story focusing on a young girl sent to a boarding
school when her father goes off to fight in World War I is adapted from
the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and is a truly outstanding film that
the whole family will love. Highly recommended! (Rated G)
You might like to check out the original film version of The Little
Princess *** (Fox - $19.95) starring the legendary Shirley Temple. (Sot
rated)
On the other hand Little Odessa *** (Alliance) may be about a family,
but it's definitely not a family film. This gritty and powerful drama
follows two brothers, one a contract killer (Tim Roth) and the other a
teenager (Edward Furlong) fending for himself on the mean streets of
Brooklyn. Others in the cast include Vanessa Redgrave and Maximilian
Schell. (Rated R)
Also worth a look is Roommates *** (Hollywood) an engaging film
about a young man who is raised by his elderly grandfather. Peter Falk
gives a tour-de-force performance as the irascible old man while D. B.
Sweeny, Julianne Moore and Ellen Burstyn lend good support. A touching
and enjoyable film. (Rated PG-13)
Among the other new and unpreviewed releases is Losing Isaiah
(Paramount) a drama about a young black woman who seeks to reclaim a
child she abandoned several years before. (Rated R)
Leonard DiCaprio heads the cast of The Basketball Diaries (C/FP)
which looks at the life of poet/writer Jim Carroll whose promising future
as a basketball prodigy was marred by drug use. (Rated R)
In Arctic Blue (Columbiaffristar) two men fight for survival in the
Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. (Rated R)
For fans of the high quality laserdisc format here are a couple of new
and highly recommended titles. Orson Welles' Othello **** (Voyager)
receives the deluxe treatment from the Criterion Collection in an
extraordinary two disc set. This release is the original version as it
appeared at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or.
What Welles went through to make Othello is as fascinating as the film
itself and thanks to the secondary audio commentary by filmmakers Peter
Bogdanovich and Myron Meisel we learn many of the intriguing details.
Among the many other bonuses in this package is Return to
Glennascaul, an almost forgotten Academy Award nominated short film
Welles made during one of the many production hiatuses of Othello.
Also from the Criterion Collection is The Day After Trinity ****
(Voyageur), the inaugural release in their new documentary series which
focuses on the life and times of J. Robert Oppenheimer the father of the
Atomic bomb. The Day After Trinity uses rare archival footage along with
first person interviews of many of those involved with the world's first
nuclear explosion in the New Mexico desert fifty years ago. This disc also
features a screen specific audio commentary by filmmaker Jon Else and
others.
