Features large, private yard,

Time has a habit of ticking away
on all of us, but Brendan "Fron"
Reilly of Cranbrook marks each of
those moments with the sound of a
tick-tock from one of his beautiful-
ly hand-crafted wooden clocks.
Reilly first began designing and
building wooden clocks in 1979
when his interest in timepieces was
peaked through examples in a
woodworking and clock-making
magazine.
Over the next five years, he craft-
ed 85 clocks in nine personally cre-
ated designs, in both wall and floor
clock models.
After taking a hiatus from clock-
making for more than 11 years,
Reilly only returned to his passion
last December.
To say Reilly's creations are
uniquely beautiful does not corn-
pletely describe the hand-cut,
wooden sections, smoothed and
molded to make the intricate
pieces.
His latest design (the next will
probably be a wall clock) is a floor
model which resembles the tradi-
tional grandfather clock style, but
with a much more open, free con-
cept.
If one could picture just the,
framework of the grandfather
clock, with none of the glass or
wood side enclosures, with the
clockworks hanging freely within
the interior and a smoothly pol-
ished copper pendulum swinging
silently in the lower reaches of the
form, the creation might come into
focus.
Created from black walnut, natu-
ral red oak or stained red oak (cus-
tomer orders possible), the time-
pieces are inlaid with brass accents
and the hands and dial markers are
crafted from African black wood.
This design, Number 10, as with
its predecessors, will be a limited
edition, usually with only 12 in a
line.
Each clock, requiring 50 to 60
hours to complete, is more than just
an object for telling the time. It is a
piece of artwork and a collector's
item.
Still finishing the edition, Reilly
says he is working towards finding
more markets for his product.
Currently, Brendan Reilly clocks
can be purchased through Marten
Arts in Bayfield as well as bou-
tiques in Toronto and Mississauga.
Custom orders are possible, for
the matching of woods and stains,
but Reilly suggests ordering several
months in advance.
"Unlike other clocks (of this
style), Reilly clocks do not require
routine maintenance. The ball bear-
ings in the works are maintenance
free as are all the other works,"
says Reilly.
As for the future, Reilly has his
sights set very high, high in the sky
that is.
"It would be really grand fun to
make very large clocks for public
buildings such as town `halls, insur-
ance companies or libraries. I
already have a large bell waiting
for the right project."
Reilly lives in Cranbrook with
his wife, Kim Yuzwa, and daugh-
ter, Anne Yuzwa-Reilly.
Anyone interested in a Brendan
Reilly clock may contact Marten
Arts in Bayfield or Reilly at 887-
9793.
