Brussels firehall officially opens

Brussels was officially opened
Saturday by Paul Steckle, Huron-
Bruce MP, Helen Johns, MPP for
Huron and Parliamentary Assistant
to the Minister of Health, and
Gordon Workman, reeve for the
Village of Brussels.
The 3,680 square-foot facility,
which includes three bays, a
training room and energy-efficient
lighting and heating systems,
received funding of $117,583 from
the Canada/Ontario Infrastructure
Works program, with each partner
(federal, provincial, municipal)
contributing one-third of the
program costs. Total project cost
was $140,828 with the balance
contributed by the municipality.
"The new firehall is a concrete
example of what can happen when
three levels of government come
together in their determination to
achieve a better quality of life in
local communities," said Steckle. "I
am proud to join my partners, and
the citizens of Brussels to celebrate
this achievement."
"The new firehall will let the
firefighters better fulfill their vital
role in Brussels," said Johns. "They
can now respond faster to fires and
emergencies, giving better fire
protection to the community. The

Sept. 13 for the Majestic Women's
Institute. President Ruth Sauve read
a poem on "We don't need anyone
different" and "We can do it
ourselves meeting".
After the opening, Yvonne

fund this worthwhile project."
"The new firehall will be an
important asset to the community
and provide residents with an
enhanced quality of life," Workman
said.
Canada/Ontario Infrastructure
Works is a $2.1 billion cost-shared
program designed to improve local
infrastructure, and is expected to
create approximately 40,000 direct
and indirect jobs.
Knight gave some history on the

Lodge meets
The first meeting of the fall
season of Morning Star Rebekah
Lodge, Brussels took place on Sept.
12 with Noble Grand Jane Hall
presiding. A pot luck supper
preceded the meeting.
Installation of officers will take
place on Oct. 10.
The assembly president will visit
Huron District on Nov. 6 in
Clinton.
